I use the Lowrance Baja, not cheap I think I paid $500 but it works awesome. It does stuff I'm not smart enough to figure out. I tried the hand held for awhile but the aluminium roof on my buggy interfered with reception.
I have been using a Garmin Nuvi 250 for a little over a year now. 3D maps, off road nav settings, battery lasts a full day on a charge, touch screen, could easily be permanent mounted in a dash and hardwired, can pick them up for around 200.Oh and it will show speeds up past 500 mph.... I know, supposed to turn them off on planes..lolI like the idea of breaking a laptop down and doing a permanent mount as long as it has a SSD hard drive..That would be a kickass display!
