RPM F-N-R Shifter options???
« on: September 12, 2009, 08:27:42 PM »

Looking for other options for a three postion shifter ( F-N-R) with positive detents for my RPM F/N/R trans.
My RPM has the detent, but I want to have a locking detent at the shifter, then soften the tension on the RPM shift detent mechanism.

I know that Neil @ ATV Racing makes some nice ones, but I already talked with him and he's waiting on some machined parts. I want his, but if he's delayed so am I.

Just looking into other "quality" options, if I can't get Neil's in time for our dune season, which is right around the corner!!

Thanks in advance, Jeff

Do you have a link to the selecter that you speak of? Im not in a hurry but do need one as well as I am setting up a RPM FNR for a customer in a rearend. This is part of the deal we worked out to include.

Thanks,

I wanna say somebody used a selector like you are talking about awhile back in a "rhino".  RC 51 Fab or area 51 fab or something like that.  Maybe I'm getting my sites mixed up.  Either way, the selector was blue and had detents on it.

I had come across this one awhile back, that I think was the same one used in that build, which started as a Rhino, but ended up more custom than anything, nice job too!

Here's the link:

I didn't care for were the shift cable attachment was, and that it is such a short handle.
That is way I really wanted the one from Neil @ ATV Racing.

I found this one on the same site, but itdoesn't say how many "positions" it has or the length of throw, I need a 3" throw.

Those both are just in/out shifters.

Need to look at some boat sites.  I know my jet boat had a real nice billet F-N-R shifter with detents.  It had a pretty good throw as well in order to move the diverter 90 deg.  Plus it was setup to drive a push-pull cable.

You already have the arm and bracket on the tranny, so that stroke must be 3"?  Also is the 3" from R to F with N half way inbetween?

That is exactly the dimensions of the detents (3" total between F to R and Neutral centered at 1.5")

I'll start searching the boat sites!

Yup,

Looks like what I found:

http://www.e-performancemarine.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=15

That actually looks like what was in my boat.  After looking for 15 minutes I thought that there would be lots to find, but this may be it.

The other thing is they are probably not grit tested.  Boating is a generally a clean environment, Corrosive but clean.

This one would be pretty easy to make into a 3 position, but I agree that you wouldn't have much leverage with the short handle.

I guess that the "boat" shifter could hve a intergrated mount "case" that bolts to the floor and then side mounts the shifter, but "in cases" the cable , with the cable housing sticking out the back of this sealed mount / case???
