GPS,Whadda Ya Like?????
« on: January 09, 2009, 06:59:48 PM »
Time for a serious talk about GPS.Entropy started a topic at OFN about using a laptop GPS receiver and a mini laptop.Seems like a cheap way to get great GPS on the cheap.Anyone doing this for offroad tho?
http://www.google.com/products?q=laptop+gps+receiver&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS266US266&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title

This type of stuff.Opinions?

the ONLY thing stand alones have going for them is their ruggedness.

Data input on any GPS is a little tricky. having a full functioning keyboard WITH NUMERIC KEPAD is the most efficient way to do it.

Despite the extra cost, get a ruggedised laptop and go from there.
If the cost is a concern, it it quite possible to put together a carPC that will cope very well.

Bug, I expect it's for Dakar type racing?

My new phone has GPS.......  If I only knew how to use it.....  I wonder if it would work at China Wall or Buttercup?

I think the phone gps uses cell towers to triangulate as opposed to satellite?  So would it work at .....?   Long as it can reach two towers would be my guess?

I use the Lowrance Baja, not cheap I think I paid $500 but it works awesome. It does stuff I'm not smart enough to figure out. I tried the hand held for awhile but the aluminium roof on my buggy interfered with reception.

I have been using a Garmin Nuvi 250 for a little over a year now. 3D maps, off road nav settings, battery lasts a full day on a charge, touch screen, could easily be permanent mounted in a dash and hardwired, can pick them up for around 200.

Oh and it will show speeds up past 500 mph.... ;D ;D ;D

I know, supposed to turn them off on planes..lol

I like the idea of breaking a laptop down and doing a permanent mount as long as it has a SSD hard drive..That would be a kickass display!

I have an old Garmin eTrex Vista, top of the line light-weight from 2001. I used it a lot when I went backpacking, and the topos were awesome.

I got a Magellan for my car (my first car gps), and after it began losing itself and pausing for five minutes at a time (crucial when in a strange city on the way to a sales meeting), I decided to try the online update. It crashed itself while doing the update (and yes, I followed the directions.) Fortunately, it was under warranty, but they took about TWO MONTHS to replace it. I've bought a hand full of car GPS's since then (about six more, for "the crew"), and they have all been Garmin. No problems at all, ever. I will never buy another Magellan--Garmin rocks.
