Hi Tone, have had a break since chrissy on this project. I seem to have so many irons in the fire at present. The kitchen reno is looming as well so it seems that some things have to take a backseat, why the fun stuff though?

Ive only drilled the housing for the cover screws and mounting holes to date and am looking at material to make the upper housings. Thread inserts used to allow higher clamping force as Im using fine threads fasteners (6x1mm) which would pull out of the ali pretty quickly

I dont know where faber finds the time to do the stuff he does  ???
I never sleep.I have to admit I had 2 major FUBARS recently that I'm really kind of ashamed to admit to but as soon as I have or make revised parts I'll GLEEFULLY spill the beans on myself. I am not afraid to admit my mistakes but I'd like to have the correct stuff to show at the same time.Call it vanity! LOL!!!! Good luck on your projects.

I agree.Forget the inserts and use coarse threads

In metric threads, there is fine, finer, and finerer.........

Actually there are quite a few choices of thread pitches in metric, and no standard like NC or NF that I have ever found.

Jap stuff usually seems to be a size finer thread than European.

I doubt Imperial (American) size bolts are easy to come by in the rest of the world.  I know that we sell plenty of spare bolts, taps and dies to places overseas that have bought our machines.

Tell us Artie, can you get a 1/4-20 bolt there?  or 3/8-16?

Yes eng you can, metric stuff is far more comprehensively available though. I could have used a coarse thread but wanted the clamping force of the fine thread. It was a conscious decision to go this way.

Why? Cost wasnt extraordinary and its only an hours job (tedious though). Never to be a problem in the future now  8)

Why? Unnecessary work with no benefit. You will have no trouble with the threads in aluminum. IMO waste of time.  But who am I to talk-I've wasted boatloads of time myself.  LOL!!!!! Project is looking good..

Uh huh, so Artie is sharing his casting journey here!

Gudonya mate!

I see Tone is here too!  G'day cobber!  Tone's helping me out with some fabbing at the moment while I try to earn some cash.  The 'global recession' hit me hard and early, but now I've got heaps of work and no time for buggy building!  Tone's a brilliant fabricator and pro motorcycle mechanic.  He should share more of his skills here!
