Axles
« on: May 02, 2009, 11:42:15 AM »
I have a question and i only ask because i think i heard Bug say he's done it before. I need to make my axles longer. Can i use tubing to achive this with cutting them and adding in the tubing. I also have two other axles that i am thinking about cutting about 5 inches out of the axle bar and using that in place to make the other axles longer. Then put the tubing over it. What do you guys think?

That will work, you just have to have the tube turned so it is round and a snug fit on the axles, weld the crap out of it and don't grind the weld down too much when your done...That's what bug did...the grind too much off the weld if I remember right :o
I've stretched lots of stuff this way

Originally i used .120 wall tubing, it lasted about 5 minutes...I used 4140 1.75 solid bar, I did turn the welds on the lathe afterwards, i broke them, i welded them back up hot as a mo fo, and they worked fine...

What i am thinking is this. Cut my axle in half. Grind that puppy down. Cut a length out of the old axle that i need. Grind it down to. Cut tubing about two inch's longer than the section im adding. Weld the solid section into place on one end. Slip the tubing over it and weld the other end. Then slide the tubing over both the welded ends and weld up both ends of the tubing. What do you think bug? Think it will hold up?

Don't grind on the axle...
It will get out of round...Leave the axle...V- the extension tube to work with you...or just turn the welder up...this works wonder's

We have done this many times with stuff like tie rods. Just a tip, I like to use the tubing notcher on both ends of the sleve to give you more weld area. Also leave as much of the axles as possible and overlap your extension tube a few inches on each side.
Its better to be a smartass than a dumbass!
