Antifreeze question...
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:27:45 PM »
My wonderful GMC shit a water pump today @ 55,800 miles! I have a love/hate relationship with my truck. Anyway, I changed out the pump. When I went to Autozone I bought the orange Prestone jugs since my truck had orange AF. The orange jugs had green AF, but the jug did say it would mix with any color. Does anyone know the difference between orange and green? I think I recall that if the vehicle has orange it should be replaced with orange, but that was years ago. Not sure if that has changed. Any idea? Thanks!

Orange protects alloys better

Check the voltage in the coolant. I forget the value but I think it's around 1/2 volt and corrosion sets in. Antifreeze over time will lose its' ability to  counter the electrolysis.

Orange stuff is Dexcool, do not mix it with green coolant.

Dexcool has many issues on it's own. I usually flush the system and swap it out around 20K.

Google Dexcool for an eye opener........

I heard from a mechanic friend that the orange sh$t turns to sugar after about 2 years. He said that the orange antifreeze crystallizes and plugs up the heater core and the radiator. He had a Pontiac come and had the orange antifreeze and the coolant came out as syrup.

Get it. Got it? Good.

Every motor I have taken apart where they used that had a LOT of chalky build up in the water passages. Would not use........

I've personally never had a problem with it. None of the customers at my old work who used it had a problem with it.

Basically, YRMD.

YRMD= Your Results May Differ? My best guess.

Your mission isn't to dive feet first into hell, but to make sure its crowded when you get there.
