Grinder Safety.
« on: May 24, 2015, 09:16:02 AM »
Found this on FB,my son's FIL posted it. I very rarely go there but for some reason I opened this time. I'm digging out my full face shield.Always worry about such a thing. I've only had one wheel blow up in several decades but......................once was enough for this guy. I think I'll take the warning.

I've found the cheapo wheels not only wear way faster, they are way more likely to fly apart as soon as they get in slight bind.  Running the gaurd would stop most likely but I have removed it on 2 of 3 grinders.

So was this his FIL or just posted.

Ouch! I keep my guards on! I have had chunks of flap disk fly off. That doesn't feel real nice either.

I guess I'll be the first to admit that I have removed all of mine. Thank you for posting this as I will be putting them back on. These types of reminders that we all need from time to time to let us know I happens and we could be next.

Thank you DW

Kind of rare for one to explode but it only takes one at the wrong time...........................

Depends on the brand. At work we had a Klingspor sales rep drop off some samples. All of the damn grinding wheels and cut off wheels were junk. They would disintegrate at any time. The plastic bodied flapper wheels were awesome however. Believe it or not, the DeWalt cut off wheels have held up the best for us. Have yet to have one of those loose a chunk.

I absolutely love the Metabo Slicer discs. Kind of pricey though. I sell an off brand -IvyClassic- and have for a few years now. This one   http://www.ivyclassic.com/en/power-tool-accessories/metalmasonry-blades/metal-blades-wheels/metal-cut-off-blades-bulk/4-12-x-047-x-78-metalstainless-cut-off-40054  is awesome!!! I've used a lot of them. They wear very well and cut like a hot knife through you know what.
