« on: July 28, 2013, 10:04:49 AM »
I have 2  12" fox 2.0 air black shocks on my buggy.  After a little under 2yrs the shafts have pitting rust on them in various spots.  I cant seem to find on google the actual fox company to contact them..  Any help?

Leaking should help oil decrease rust.  rofl  Seems to me, I read about some problems with shafts right about the time they change colors.

Wasn't it that fox just flash chrome the shafts and king hard chromes? I thought I had read that but could be very wrong.

Maybe. And the one I remember fox made them right. But don't hear of hardly any issues. Everyone has a bad lemon once in a while. Some guys run fork boots on rears to keep rocks off for gravel hard pack ridin.

Wasn't it that fox just flash chrome the shafts and king hard chromes? I thought I had read that but could be very wrong.

Hard chrome is just that. No copper underneath the chrome.  Hard chrome has to be ground down and then polished, very little nickle under it and no copper.  Decorative chrome has a base of nickle and lots of copper that has been polished before chroming.  Most of the shafts have just had a nickle base put on and thats it. Just enough to keep them from rusting.Same as the shock bodies. Nickle is hard and will wear well.  Nickle is softer then chrome so it will wear off where chrome will not.  If you were to see a shaft that has been hard chromed it will look dull and feel rough to the touch.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

here you go.

Quote
KING: The material used would not be disclosed but we believe the shafts to be made of  steel and hard chrome plated. A nice advantage of King shocks is the chamfered edge where the seal assembly slips over. This makes for easy reassembly without galling the wiper seal.
Quote
FOX: 17-4 Stainless steel shafts are utilized on all Fox Shocks except for the 1.25" and 1.625" shaft air shocks. The shafts on the 2.5 shock pictured is .875" in diameter.

When I sold mine I figured I got about what I had in parts, many were bought used.  Nothing for may 100's hrs labor.  But I was ready to move on, are you ready?  Nice bike!

You can build another, I did and I figure I got less $$ in this one, built a lot faster, and much nicer rail.

yea id like to build a nicer one, with a more though out design.  when you struggle for years with design and what works and doesnt work.  You kind of understand what you need to do and what you want.   Now I have access to a waterjet for free-super cheap.  Id also like to do a 1000cc engine too.

My main initiative for trading, is that i never really get to use the buggy anymore.  No one is ever available to ride with me, and I would get a lot more use from a larger highway cruiser bike for my gf and I.
