From the very same episode:

There's a reason John Stewart was recently voted Americas most trusted newscaster in a TIME magazine poll...

He might be a satirist, but he will call you out on lies and bullshit, face-to-face.

Lord help us.
"There can be no divided allegiance here.  Any man who says he is an American,
but something else also, isn't an American at all.  We have room for but one
flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is
the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a
loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907

I dunno about the Lord helping us, if he/she/it really exists, I reckon he/she/it would be a bit busy to worry about a bunch of blokes yammering on about buggies and whatnot.

So, instead, I present a (hopefully) funny webcomic:

All that proves is that the people that read TIME and respond to their polls are ....how shall we say.......retarded.

I think it suggests that folks are tired of lies and bullshit when they turn to a comedy show for a dose of something that might be plausible.  The extremes of media left or right are so out of control that a humorist who can find the central point and debunk it is bound to be successful.

kinda, history shows us why...

Basically, when politics gets so bad eg: "freedom fries" or the ongoing suspension of habeas corpus or preaching of free speech while simultaneously silencing discussion, satire is the only way to speak out against the tyranny.
So if the society is more reliant on satire for good info, you can be sure all is not well.

You notice they pick on both sides now?

If by they, you mean Stewart and Colbert, and both sides you mean the Dems and the GOP, then they have always (well, as long as I've been watching them, anyway) ridiculed stupidity from both sides.

They are more so now.I watch them but for entertainment only. I put no faith in what I hear on them. Yes , I agree that they have no problem pointing out the hypocrisy of both sides tho.

That is a good series - yes they do - 60 minutes, PBS, face the nation - more news "magazines" than actual news casts
