I'll leave Idaho on the 13th.  If all goes well I'll have the new car with me and  I mite just swing down off of 80 on 281 and come on down to LS before going home.  It looks doable.  Should put me at LS on the 15th or 16th. Or I could just go on over to York NB south on 81 to McPherson and catch 61 on down to 281. I'll be pulling a borrowed trailer so no ice cream.  3:

What a great group. You offer drinks (alky), dinner (roost), and dessert (ice cream)
I think I will just skip dinner and drinks and go right to dessert.

i did find time sun to pull all 4 shocks and re-valve them yet agian. i hope this time gets it spot on but i'll find out in 4 weeks. i did change the oil in them as well since it was pretty dark black with a silver film floating in it lol i also found 4 out of 6 bolts loose on my sprocket and rotor was still good. so just a few little things to do that wouldn't need to be done to ride just want to.   i am now valved 45/3-1 in the front and 60/3-1 in the rear. the rears were 60/2-1 and the fronts were origanlly 60/85, i have changed the fronts 3 times now. second time i went 45/2-1 and that made a huge diff but still rebounding to fast. the 2.5 fox air's are proving to be a challenge and prob too much shock for the front of this lighter weight rail.  ;D but when it comes to handling under cuts and fast down hill runs they do not in any way feel like they bottom out or are an abrupt stop they are damn smooth there!!

I'm in. Same site as last spring 633.  16th to the 19th.  Either be green or yellow.  At this point, after I got the new engine in and the test drive last Wednesday It will not hurt my feelings if the Canadian fits my car or not.  8) The Mantis runs like a striped ape.  If you guys thought it ran good before you would be totally amazed at it now.   The green machine has twice the toque as before.  I was being very Conservative last Wednesday on the first trip out on the new motor and had the tack light set at 5500 rpm and the boost turned down to 15 pounds.  The car has twice the power at them settings then the last motor that I ran at 6800 rpm and 25 psi.   The new engine has aftermarket cams in the heads.

Ya he knew mine was broke but still wanted to buy it. My luck has not been the best here of late.  Don't know what's up but seems like the last year or so I have broke something on every trip.  Should have replaced everything on the left front after that rod end broke when you were riding with me at Idaho a couple of years back.  Ever since I have had nothing but trouble with that corner.  Rod end at Glamis and shock this last week at LS.  Could be my driving style LMAO.

Dune stories and memories are the best.  rofl rofl rofl
Of coarse sometimes it takes awhile for the humor to be seen by those involved.

I sure am glad our rides are smaller.
Less roost and easier to pull.
If I get stuck or broke I will just sleep on the dunes before I become a Fast story.

And the saga continues.  Truck would not run well Friday morning blowing blue smoke and idling rough. Went to get fuel and as it warmed up it acted ok but took it to a shop anyway.  They are removing the injectors and sending them out to check. Had to over night them back to Wichita for the check. Some place in Utah could not get to them until Thursday. Only a few places in the US that check electronic 6.7 Cummins injectors. So we are stuck here at the dunes at least until next Wednesday. Hopping that it will be and injector but it could be a burned piston again.  Only good thing is the new car is running great. Sorry guys looking like we will not make LS.  My slot at the end is paid for if anyone wants it.   Ran with the big v8 cars yesterday on a very fast run. They could not run away from the subi cars. One of them with a gps speedo said he seen 80 MPH going across one of the dunes.  The new HRT runs the best in fourth gear.  Very little third and never any second. We ran all day yesterday and I only put in six gallons of fuel. Running in fourth sure helps on gas mileage.  Going to set the toe in on it this morning I think it is a bit much at one point five inches.  The car has a tendency to wallow. Shocks are a little light for my big ass so will need to revalve them when I get time. The new owner of the Mantis is loving it.  After the fast run he had a grin a mile wide.  The Mantis is running like a mofo it will pull away from the HRT if I don't keep on the throttle.  I taught the Canadian right, he can really drive it good. He missed second twice yesterday but recovered quick enough to keep up.

damn!! well never like to hear about truck problems , specially that far from home!! i hope it is only an inj and not another piston problem, how hot were the egt's getting on the way up? glad to hear the rail runs good and sorry to hear you won't make it but there's always next time.  i already knew the new mantis owner would have perma grinn considering what he was stepping up into!! lol

Got the trailer home and half loaded (myself). Now to start actually loading up. HOPING new radiator will be here today but not looking good, so hopefully the weather temps will be a bit cooler this run and I will be ok. New 20t sprocket up front and finally using the hub on the Jeffco with a 35t rear. Gained a few links in the chain and got my gearing where I like it for the dunes. Have to plumb the breather tank for the rev box, tidy up a couple little things and hope to roll out Wed morn. Looking to be there mid afternoon..
Safe travels all!

Your right Deano.

After what I have invested in the truck this should not be happening.  But it is and that's life.  Truck is back and runs just fine without the trailer.  Tomorrow morning will tell whats up.  New car is loaded in the trailer. and we are ready to rock and roll in the early AM.  Not to bad a deal getting the new car in.  It took a couple of shots but was able to winch it up and into the trailer backwards.  I will know soon as I hit the freeway if the truck will pull without the HI egt's. Heres hopping.  Really have missed you guys this year.  Next spring well due double icecream.

Then after the four days with out the truck because it was in the shop we start home and bam.  Had to happen just as I was pulling a thousand foot pass coming out of Utah into Wyoming.  Had a line of eighteen wheeler's two miles long behind me very pissed off.  Truck would run twenty in second gear.  This is the turbo inter-cooler hose that runs from the turbo to the inter cooler.

ya good folks for sure!     fast i am working on uploading a video right now and it says 703 min's remaining 1g file so be patient lol pay special attention to the number of rides that take off for the big run across the dunes. we had 3 v8 rails 2 turbo suby rails motor cycle powered rails sled powered and utv's. i went dead last cause i wanted a shot of the hole bunch taking off. my lens fogged over twice out of all my footage. one video is completely useless and the 1 of the bunch taking off it started fogging over so i used what was visible cut the rest out.

I have been uploading a 1g file to youtube since last night about 11 pm lol it's only at 30% at noon lol but the laptop keeps going to sleep and it's windows 8 so I don't know how to shut that down for now. I did edit several clips together cause I thought we might like to see the people that got together in groups out on the sand for once as well as close ups of the rails.

Yes Fabr.  Go to upload on youtube and find the file on the gopro.  Youtube has some editing stuff on there now, but its all useless to me.

That was over 2gig file.  I used Obamanet.  Fastest, quickest stuff out there.  so fast you cant see it happening.  rofl

I still have a good one from spring trip I edited, never could get it into right format.  Pink blob lines w/a few buggy scenes.  But its got music and graphics.

I recorded mine in 720, 60 fps.  this new hero 3+ does 120 fps suppose to be better for "action" but i forgot to try.  I've seen a few videos on Youtube in 1080, but most comp monitors are only 720.  DS's video seemed jerky.

Post by: dsrace on September 24, 2014, 11:13:35 AM
it does look jerky and i think that is more often when on the front but when i watch the go pro footage on my computer it doesn't look like that. i did not upload it using that go pro system you talked about in you tube because i edited 5 vids into 1 and cut them as small as i could but enough so we could all see most of everyone that was there and some close ups of the rails. now i use adobe 9 premiere elements and i like it. when you use it to burn a dvd you make from the footage it turns out real nice.

carl you are right i have had a gremlin in this motor from the get go and the engine miss and back firing through the intake and what i believe to be a lean condition are all related. i have started tearing into the motor to check a few things before i tear the head off. i can say this....which the merc gauge hooked up to sync the throttle bodies i can smooth the idle if i adjust #4 cyl off a ways from the other 3 cyl. choke it down so to speak. i am going to try and 0 out the bazzaz and try it and if it continues then i'll remove the bazzaz completely and try it again while the gauges are hooked up. if that isn't it i will swap the inj's around and try it again and if that isn't it then swap to a spare ecu enemy has and if that isn't it then  i will open the side case and check all timing marks again. if that isn't it then the motor comes out! i am going to get a new 02 sensor first and check the exh gaskets again as well as the 1 seam there is before the 02 with soapy water to make sure there isn't any leaks before all of the above.

agreed 100% which is why i will check with soapy water at this time all poss points up to the o2. my for now test will just be to see what will take the miss out of the idle. it would be nice to have 4 02 sensors on the header itself!!

as you know fabbr when the bazzaz went into default ( according to bazzaz techs (tech's as in two diff tech's) it ran closer to what i thought it should be like but at that time the #4 exh gasket was on it's way out i believe.  i did swap those wires again while i was there and didn't change a thing.  so who know  ??? all i know is by fri night it was at it's worst and i can hear valve train noise where i hadn't before so like i said i'll try those first then yank it out. once out if it come to that i will decide on what to do with it??!!  ;) ;)

you were right the auto tuner was lean the system out because of the 02 sensor. it was odd though that while the 02 was reading lean the engine was running rich and adding fuel made it so rich my wife and other could smell raw fuel over at carls camper lol but the 02 showed the engine was going leaner yet! but yes the exh gasket was leaking bad at that point. as a matter of fact as soon as i shut it off and restarted it, that is when it blew out and i could hear it at idle clear as a bell. even with the aftermarket crush copper gaskets on it the miss is still in #4 so that's where i'm going to start, any suggestions?

NOOOOOOO!!!!!! You must also check for a good distance down stream of the O2 also. Believe it or not, O2 can and will flow up the pipe as well as down from a leak. The ex tract pulses do this.

Do a correct leak down test of all four cylinders . This will tell you of the rings/valves/seats mechanical condition. Don't rely only on a compression test unless you have a definite low compression issue. If it passes the leak down, look at the electronics and injection .Don't be fooled by the sound of air leaking while doing the test. All that matters is that there is not too much % leakage. On a used engine you might normally see 25% ish more or less.
You also saw that the header flange bottomed out on the ex spigots with the copper crush rings. Replace them with the stockers so the flange does not bottom on spigots so you can be assured of a tight seal. I think you planned on that tho.

ya I did plan on  changing the gaskets to oe. I was just reading on the pulses bringing the 02 back up the pipe! lol and I also found this on a busa forum ....this peaked my interest because I was looking at the factory crimp job on my inj wires last night on my original throttle bodies that I replaced with these. I also checked to be sure the wires were the same in the plug between 01 and 05. they are but this post was interesting because I was thinking I need to pull the inj harness off and check that factory crimp.

"Default

I may have had a similar problem.

Bike was not well, took it in to a reputable mechanic

Calls me to say the first cylinder is not firing properly at low revs
Temp of header is significantly lower than the other 3.

First we though fuel filters, blocked injectors etc etc

But despite much time and effort, getting injectors removed and cleaned, filters replaced etc we could not get rid of the problem.

Anyway for some reason #1 injector was not getting a strong signal at low revs.

After more dicking around all he could find was a "possibly" loose bit of soldering near the ECU. He resoldered it and the problem went away.

If this guy didnt have the repuation of being the neastest and mst ananl retentive guy in this city I would have started to think he was just after my money.

But all is good now and the bike runs better than new.

Interestingly he did some work on the front forks and changed the fork oil (@ 25000 kms)
He said it was full of crap and gunk.
Whatever he did the bike handles noticeably better now. In fact of all the minor changes Ive dont to the bike I would say that having a professional simply service the front forks was the best thing Ive done yet.

I finally got one uploaded to youtube. Figure I will post this first since I was telling DS how smooth the sand was. At about 13 mins or so we were running straddled on the peaks. It was like running a dragons tail.

Yes that was me leading. And that is the day I text you and told you how smooth the sand was before you got there.

That was Mike in his XL that buzzed around at the end, he was following Toby(the cameraman) in the Z1 turbo RZR 900 long travel and he was following me.

As for the roost  kick I owe Toby much worse than he received (twice). I do have mirrors so I knew he was off to the side and on camera. He was pretty damn brave to keep pulling up behind me going over. He just got a new gopro and we finally got him to stop doing selfy vids and follow somebody or point backwards and lead even better. He WILL NOT LEAD. Cracks me up. But he will be all over your ass for sure. Looked like at one point he was going to land on me.

It is just a trust thing. You guys get it. Some you trust more than others. rofl rofl rofl   Like, hey here we go, follow me, as fast as I go know matter what. Trust me I know where I am going.

Man I need to get to the dunes more. Has not even been a month and I miss it.

It's 4.5 hours one way for me. You are what? 8 hours? Don't have to make a big production of it like we do fall/spring.

8 hrs and $600 round trip with toyhauler and it's a little one lol    it would be nice to go a few more times but at 4.5 hrs day trips would be taken frequently lol

Ya,it adds up WAAAAAYYYYYYY too fast.  thumb down thumb down thumb down FWIW,I'm really hoping you guys will consider one of the DTS meet ups being at St.A. this year. Carl, you can stop here for the night and follow or lead the next 2 ,12 hour, days. bs1 It would be a 3 day (or)deal for you for sure. You guys from St .L. and Nebraska would be just fine though.

working on that one too lol and from lincoln ne it's about 14  hrs to st A. i believe the st L guys well it sounds like it's about 4hrs to kansas city for them and kansas city is 3.5 hrs from lincoln so still a good drive like carls!

Fabr, thanks but the closest way is thru Lincoln Ne.  14 hrs to Lincoln, drove that once already.
I've got some family/friends in Wyoming and and the closest way is thru Lincoln-St louis- Chattanooga Tn.  I've mapped it many times.  BTw Glamis is 30 miles closer than ST A to me,  bs1 drowning kick.  I'd like to go next yr, but if so it will be my only dune trip.  But it be worth it, and there be tons other stuff to see/do on the way.  Just need to find a runway for the wife!  ;D
