Throttle cable modification
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:28:48 PM »
Got to modify my throttle cable, anyone successfully soldered a brass to a stainless cable, I have seen Rowyco post he has made the entire barrel end from solder, To much trouble for me, I was gonna get a piece of brass rod, drill it to cable size, and chamfer the back side, peen the cable so it wedges in the chamfer and solder it up... Everything i have found online says this, But it has to be hard soldered.. Cant be soft soldered with the shit that melts at 450 degrees. Need the regular ol plumbing solder i think... Bro in law is a great solderer he will do that part...

Anyone done it or tried it and failed?

Works great!  As long as the cable is clean and will tin....    Make the hole in the barrel as small as possible to get the cable through, and the countersink fairly large so you can really fray the cable before soldering.  We could never afford cables as kids........  Solder or braze.

Not sure......  I have quite a bit laying around.  Plumbers should work fine.  Use flux.

I have read not to use lead based solder that melts at 450-600 degrees, but to use the stuff that melts at like 1200...

Melts at 1200?  Thats not solder......  Its aluminum.  ;D ;D ;D

Actually I don't know the temps.  The electrical stuff is all below 600deg.

I always did it for a temporary fix.  Buy a new cable tightwad.........

Used my welder to puddle the end of a cable for my girls gokart.  Little shapping looked pretty good.  2 years not a problem.

Yah, It's never a problem till your 5 miles from camp and the sun is almost down.  Ever tried to get somewhere with the idle screw screwed all the way in for power?  10K RPM till you let the clutch out, then your lucky to get 5 MPH.  :P

I'm just kidding.  They are probably swedged on?  They seem like they may be made of lead?  When we used to fix them and they would break, it was usually because we made it brittle near the end from to much heat?

Go to the weld shop and buy silver solder. That is the proper stuff to use.Get a bit of the flux for it too.Use a steel rod  for the end. You'll need an acety torch to melt it.Brass ans regular solder don't hold well with SS cable.
