Toy time $$$$ is tough but I sold my buggy. While it did get to be a good performing mini I had things I wanted to do different-better-bigger.
So the first step, buggy loaded for last trip to meet up with buyer.

Picked up this motor a few weeks back, looking for a Busa but this is close and I snagged it for 1/4 of the price. Also
picked up stole the cluster and header, $100 for both. ;D

So after the ride with Enemy in his rail I was hooked like a hooker on crack! DS has hooked me up with unbelievable CAD drawings, that I had to change. Does anyone build without changeing crap? So we are a family of three and this rail is going to seat three. So I made the changes for the extra room.
Going to run f150 outer cv, A-arms all around, RCV inner fixed 930 joint, and hopfully 0 plunge.

So I've got 90% of the parts ordered, most have not arrived thumb down. So I'm cleaning up thumb down and I hate that. I'm using A-arms in rear with non-plunge cv's so I need the rest of rear parts to make sure on the ###. F150 outer cv RCV fixed non-plunge inner 28" axles. Fox air shocks, rear center drive, axles, steer rack, tires & wheels, and and a crap load of heims and bungs hopfully be here by weekend. Well most of it anyhow.

Its about 80% DSrace's design. I changed some of the ##'s to make the width work out. I spent about 10 hrs on the phone with him, asking about angles and confirming lengths. Then drew it up in CAD. He don't do any drawings, only a sketch that was drawn with his foot. rofl rofl rofl
I'll owe him a big bottle of Jack, might p/u from distillery since its not too far. ;D

I mounted my floor on the underside of the floor frame. Just curious as to any advantages/disadvantages of mounting on the topside of the floor frame? Just curious.

??? It sits at bottom of tubes, but tabs are under it. I guess if I loose all the bolts I'd still have the tabs to hold up floor. Little cleaner looking as tabs are "hidden".
This weekend should be good, if the snow doesn't slow down delivery of goods. ;D Hoping for this to be a roller in a few weeks. And should make the spring trip, as long as its a late May, early June. ;)

I see now. At 1st I thought the floor was on top of the tubes. There are some that do put the floor on top, just not sure other that looks inside the passenger area why.
I really like the shape of the front end. The back end of my buggy tapers similar to yours. I am using a V8 engine and I am not sure I want to try and put a wing on or not. To do a wing it will have to overhang the sides. Not a big deal just not sure it would look good or not. My buddy is building one and he made the back end more square and it looks pretty good.

The floor on the bottom of the tubes makes for a better skid pan as the flat surface down low is better. Less catching of the frmae on the ground and stuff.
But these lower floors often contain and hold sand or mud etc in between the tubes.
So others put the floor above the tubes as it looks nicer on top and sand tends to flow off as its not trapped by the tubes.
But then if you bottom out the tubes hit and hang up. Much easier to damage a tube of the frame like this.
Down low flooring with holes in places (corners) to let sand/mud out or metal grating even

My thoughts exactly. I left space down each side of the floor to make it easier to remove the sand.

I left 1/8" gap between frame and floor. Even then you can trap a lot of sand.

The alum sheet was only 60" wide and the part at back measures 62" so I've got a little triangle area thats 1" wide and 2" long on the outsides. Once I get the pedals and seats in I may pop a couple more 1" holes. Be lighter that way too. I will prob do side panels for this one as that is where most of the crap seemed to come in at.

And the ultimate delay, were moving. So buggy gone to a new shop, and man I gots lots of shit. Took a beating on the house, but hoping to pick up another for a steal. Were excited!!

1100 paddles, 29-30" tall. 6.75 5 ribs for front, about 28" tall.
Shop is where I work, 15,000' warehouse plus another 5000' of office. Gotta put up a few more lights in that area, but the forklifts and heavy equipment should make lowering and removing engine easier. ;D Sucks not having your build at home where you can go kcik on it for an hour or two in the evening, also sucks having it where you work, where you "shouldn't" be working on it during business hours.
Wait, I wonder if they will pay me to build this thing, I might actually come out ahead???? LMAO LMAO LMAO Have been plaing with front shock placement when it was slow. ;)

It was like that is the rock racing and before that for jeep fab, those shops that went out of business because of bad practices just made people like me want to be able to do it myself. In the end it hurt the good shops and hurt my brain cells. :swig:

That very good to hear. I didn't mean ,in any way, to dog RCV. RCV is a very good company. I just had a long wait with repeated delays for some items and know how things go sometimes. I will always have RCV at the top of my list of driveline components. Carl,you will be quite impressed with the quality of those non plunge 930 CV's.

X-mas in April. ;D ;D Should have all the steering stuff to finish that off, and got the RCV cv's. 6 wk delivery and that not the longest I've heard. I didn't order a spare but if lead times are like that I believe I will.
On the RCV cv's on side of the star has a tapered part on splines other is flat. Any pro/con to direction? The star is off center maybe 3/16(taper side recessed) As for angle doesn't matter f150 max out 1st. I'm sure the taper was for snap in axle clip, but won't matter with bolt on application.
And my gift from Candice from her trip. She had a blast. Dont want to know what it cost.

After a little testing, similar to Engineeer's, trying to find pivot center of f150 cv using intrepid hub. Same as using ford hub, 3.375" hub flange mount face to pivot of cv. The fixed rvc cv seems to pivot in the center of unit. So now I can finish design work on rear wheel uprights and the lower rear frame. Because of the non plunge setup of these cv's, good enough wasn't close enough.

Did get some stuff done buggywise, but havnt found my camera yet. So pic are from phone and not as good. Had to get a piece of 1-1/2 tube for the dash bar. So the clamp on steering shaft housing would work. Steering all done, and that allowed me to finish bracing up the A-arm cradle in front. Thinking another brace tube up there, still studying.....
So moved on to the lower shock mounts. Really wanted to mount shocks to outside or under the hood. Outside causes the shock to go regressive, so thumb down. Under the hood with a small hoop for tower.
Also made up one of my rear carrier's. P/u a plate from Livewire for intrepid hubs, wow that part was easy. The rest was, printed cad drawing on paper and torch cut/grinder cut cleaned up to lines and welded. 4 heims on hub 5 heims on frame. Just need to copy to other side.

5/8 chromo heims, 1-1/4 .120 tube for lower arms. Upper arms and bracing 1-1/4 .095. Also using some 1" .095 for bracing, but prob not in arms.
Since I have to move my front upper shock mounts to inside of frame. kick And since I FULLY welded looks like I need to remake that lower arm. Need to move lower mount outward to reduce ratio since shock will be leaned in. 30" wheel travel with the frame smacking the ground at 28" sounds painfull.

if you go inside the frame try setting the shock on top of the a-arms and see where that goes.

if you set the shock on top of the a-arm all the way down as close to the wheel as you can then stand it up out side of the chassis, what do you get at that point?

I am thinking he is gonna burn for it. He was told to NOT go after the guy by the 911 operator and he still followed. THEN he got out of his truck and went after the teen TOO. The teen was just walking down the sidewalk.
Even if he does not go to jail I bet somone takes him out. His life is over. Witness protection will fail on him I get a feeling. If he does go into jail it will be solitary. Genral population would use him up and spit him into a coffin in short order.

I could also see someone stealing a Razor pretty easy. Once out of site you load it into a little enclosed trailer and drive off like you own it and the only ones who might suspect you would be the ones you took it from.
Even driving away from the actual stealing site would not draw much attention if you played it cool. If the owners go for just an hour luch a thief could have a good lead on them.
I aint been to Glamis in years (gotta change that) but when I was they were talking about guys stealing older quads and three wheelers that had no keys like most used to not have.
It was said they caught one guy who hopped on an old Honda 250r three wheeler and he took off like a bat out of hell.
But a cable was attached to the trailer tounge and the three wheelers rear axle and after 15 feet the machine stopped.
Bent handle bars and a crook who could not walk away were the result.
Sadley California does not have the stand your ground law or the castle law. Gotta bury your crooks in the sand out there.

Really wanted these shocks to go under hood, but funtion has to out weigh form sometimes. If I dont get it done I wont need a hoody, rofl. Bad reference. But seat mounted, steering all done except for an adapter for the auto wheel to buggy disconnect. Shocks mounted and tied in, A-arms done. Now I can move to the rear end.That should be a real adventure. drowning kick drowning.

I've got one side of rear suspension tacked in place. No binding ;D and I cant see that the axle plunges any so cant be much. Looking for ideas on bracing for rear arms, I've looked thru many builds and have some ideas, but.....

I do have the rear suspension and hubs built. Picked up some more hardware today to bolt in hubs and cv's. Also mounted radiator. Ordered some alum sheet for fuel sump and airbox. Hope to take the alum to be welded next week. See if I can throw some pics up for you'll.
Out of town for a few days, gotta thank the wife for putting up with me for 16 yrs. Damn time flies. Happy wife=more buggy time. ;D

I think the vertical load is ok but you need to do something to keep it from twisting the tube that you are putting the load into..... See the crude sketch below :)

Lance that would work, also down to outside tube. I knew it need something else, and up to roof might make motor a perm mount. I think I'll go stare a bit at see what the voices say.

Carl, Does both the spring force and shock force transfer through that mount?
If the spring and shock forces are in the same plane you should be good to go with the double sheer mount, but if it is out of plane, as Lance is elluding to, then you may want to add some reinforcement. Perhaps just some gusseting at the mount intersections would be sufficient?

I'm either going to run a tube straight forward or back to outside frame rail. I looked at both ways but will wait for a few other items to decide which one. Will build airbox this week and it might be too close to rad since I had to lift engine to get exhaust to run under. Need some oval exhaust tube to go thru frame. Hummmm to Internet I go.

While studing shock mount, I had to twist lower mount to stay within shock heim. Cycled rear susp, all is good. Made a few tabs to mount middle seat, just nothing photo worthy.
Then UPS stopped by, woohoo my new wing trunk. But It was too big, so I had to cut it down and will have a couple new bends placed before having it welded. Pics then. Ds was pretty sure I could get 30 beers, 1000' of tow rope, a shovel, and a floor jack. now I'm down to 100' strap and a 18pk, so BYOB. ;D Also got plates for new airbox, and have sump welded on my old alum tank.

Made new airbox. Filter from mid-70's datson 240. But I've lost one of my stacks. bs1 Also moved the rad back and down a bit. Much happier with this location.

Working out my final gearing. And since anything smaller than the 15T zx12 sprocket is like finding Jimmy Hoffa, I've found a machine shop to cut some up. The zx gearing internally is taller than some of the other sport bikes, I'm thinking a 12T front will get me close. Chart bottom right compares it to busa. Thought?

Trouble with busa tranny's is they are too close ratio from 2nd up with a big step from 1 to 2. Further ,first is wayyyyy too fricken high to start with. Of course ,my buggy is 1800# approx without passengers. Lighter buggies may not need a lower first for taking off easily on slopes. 5th and 6th are way,way,way too low also. Maintaining any decent road speed should not require 8K + rpm. No need but unless willing to spend$$$$ we are stuck with it.

i wouldn't be surprised if you get 2 years out of the 12t but that's still a tight bend so as long as your chain is long with that big rear sprocket you should be ok on chain heat. the rpm would be nice but for the money i would be going fabbers direction in the future. looking good carl

I'm still knocking away at buggy. Not much photo worthy about tearing it apart to finish weld, add a bunch of tabs, and got it into some primer. When I get some paint on I'll shoot some more pics. Got some more goodies outsourced, but they're slow.

After 4 trips around the frame I think the frame is finally fully welded. Cleaned up tubes with xylene then sanded for the self etching primer! Finally yest got the paint sprayed. jj: Silver hammertone. Very happy with way it turned out! Best part only $15/qt. Had to but 2. Gonna get this thing reassembled in the next week, so I can get it wired and plumbed. I really need 1 test drive before the sand. drowning

Brace frame under floor better for big ass feet. rofl
Move rad up 6-8" for better cooling. Ran a little hot after hard fast runs.
Fix cv/boot
Finish exhaust
Tune motor
Few more brace tubes in frame
Do something else for wheel adapters/wheels
Also get my butt in gear on trailer, although using it empty gave us a better idea of what we need and want.

Alright, after recovering from trip I've spent some more time shopping. The two biggest problems I had where not enough bracing in floor which caused the alum to bounce and since the pedals (GAS) bolted to it it would cause the "death hop". So I've got some new bracing ideas for bottom and couple additional side tubes too to weld in.
2nd issue was Empi steel wheel adapters; Tehy make a 5x4.5 to 5x205. Meant to put dodge/jeep wheels on wide five VW. I had flipped them around and I must say that was a waste of $46.85 ($50 for adapter less the $3.15 I got for them at scrap yard). So I spent the extra for some billet alum ones. Pics soon.
Also had some cooling issue after hard runs, rad is prob too low, but I'm gonna put the shroud on 1st before I move it up.
I scored a steal on a Bazzaz FI control with auto tune. A new used one actually for a CBR1000. They dont make one for the 12, but tech said it dont matter what bike, if your running the tuner it will learn the map. Bazzaz tech support has been great! A few wires will have to cut but not a big deal. This should really fill in some dead spots on this motor, now to finish the exhaust so I can install the O2 sensor.
And lastly, I had many thing temp mounted, switches, gauges, keyed ing, start button because I knew I was gonna try my hand at a bad ass dash/hood. Will try to upload CAD drawings on those.
But what took me down a day early was torn cv boot. Easy? Nope!! N over cv boots in Waynoka. Said they didnt sell many, but had a shit pile of the chromo boot flanges. So I've already got the flanges to protect boots from bolts, and new boots. Outter f150 boots from Orielly , lifetime warrenty and $15.

Ok so I got the new brace tubes in floor. Sorta hard to make out new tube from the silver paint get out your glasses. 2 tubes from cradle tubes in rear all way to front cradle. Then 2 outside tubes come off rear cradle just in front of 3rd arm and those run to cross tube at front of seat. Gotta few more small tubes in side of rail and want a X or Y behing seat. Prob gonna have to make removeable to get motor out so I'm on the fence on that so far.
last few pics are of the new alum wheel adapters for rear. Real happy with them and should be no more problems there.

Next part was I always knew I was gonna put a dash to hold all the switches and gauges. Maybe music or GPS. Had to scratch the 40" tv idea cause nothing would work with vibration. rofl thumb down rofl So first part was the hood; it looks like it floats out on the point at the nose. No real stuctural benefit, just for looks. Then dash was CAD'ed up along with the scoops from the hood. All taken apart to lay flat and cut out of the alumilite. This stuff is lighter than alum and quite, only a thud when hit so hopfully no ringing. Down side is can't weld it, and bends are tricky, but I already had a plan for that and we'll have to wait for pics. The side panels will be made from it too. And if I get froggy I'm hoping to have center part open but I could be drowning drowning drowning.

So a few changes are in order. Pulled clutch out because it was slipping. Looks great actually, at top of spec limit. Zx12 are picky bastards on stack height. Scuffed the steels, cleaned everything well and put in HD springs. Also gonna move clutch slave away from side of engine as I think heat is causing slave to pull just enough to slip too.
Also kept having overheating issue, so the rad gonna have to move. You can see current spot down low right behind engine. So no fresh air, just hot engine dead air. Goiong back about 12" and up 6".

Never done. rofl rofl rofl After tonight I'll have another huge upgrade to work on, but that be another couple months.
But back to current state;
new HD clutch spring. Gauge of spring is larger OD plus the extra length. The '02 has the better basket, and it the clutch and steels measured out like new. Scuffed the steel with scotchbrite and reassembled.
Believe real clutch problem came from clutch slave mounted to side of motor. Once it got got it pull just a little and slip. So moved slave to a new bar about 4-5" from motor now.
Cooling issues are hopefully resolved with moving rad back about 12" and up 6". It was tucked right behind engine and airbox and not getting enough clean air to front side.
Few more little things, clean up some more extra wires, but I'm ready. Gotta work on trailer next. Gotta upgrade planed for that too. :l

Rear A-arms and carriers are sandblasted from front tires. Pretty good, and easy to touch up. It will be good til powder time, if its ever powder time.

Well, a car build is never done. Still need more air to rad, cooling was better but not were I want it. Picked up a new fan, 1/3 more cfm. Also picked up a new remote oil cooler kit off eBay. Slick little setup for $100 and it has the remote oil lines the turbo will need. Braided lines and a cute little cooler. Finally warming up enough to get back out to work on it. No heat in shop area and the coldest/longest winter in 20 yrs.

I'm gonna bite bullet and move up above motor. Really liked it being hidden, but hate the breaks to cool down. Also checking other parts of cooling system too.

simple intake shroud will do the same thing and still be out of sight. If you do move it up don't tilt it any more than absolutely necessary or the repositioning may not help. just my 2 cents. Just wait till you see where I have the rad in the desert car. It will need a bit of air directing but I do not want a radiator just inches from my head like so many cars are built.

it could work to funnel air in and I still think that oil cooler would do the trick as well since the antifreeze is taking on the temp of the oil as well. separating the two and cooling the oil I think will make a huge diff but shrouds do do a lot too!

Ditch the traditional 50/50 antifreeze also. Use distilled water and perhaps 20% pink antifreeze. You'll be surprised at how much better that works . You can also go distilled water and water wetter . The absolute best coolant is pure distilled water but we need something added to lube seals and provide corrosion protection. That takes a lot less antifreeze than 50/50. Make sure you add extra coolant for winter tho.Lots of info on the net about this if interested.

Just the addition of a perimeter "spill plate" to keep the air it is getting from just flowing around it would maybe all that is needed. Perhaps 3" tall or so.

Propylene glycol as opposed to ethylene glycol . Propylene glycol carries much more heat away than ethylene glycol based . Yes,rv antifreeze is PG antifreeze.

Thinking about airflow, drowning, and even though cage is open there is resistance in passenger compartment. So air crosses up and over down. And having the radiator mounted like first pic, air could slide on down rad instead of thru it?
Second pic is how I see many mounted on big cars with wing trunk kinda wrapping around and makes good sense, but I would be unprotected by cage and have to redo wing. thumb down
So I leaning towards 3rd pic. Up in clean air.

From a safety standpoint,option 3 is by far the worst thing possible.Cooling wise,the best. I would not do option 3.
Option 2 is bad on the cooling side due to the airflow just packing in the fine and then just bypassing the core. Put a perimater air dam on it and the airflow issue is gone but the position still looks goofy as hell.
I like option 1 by far the best. Still needs the air dam but it looks good positioned there.

Additionally,if using PG antifreeze you will definitely want to run at a low concentration as it is of a heavier viscosity than EG antifreeze and therefore harder to pump if used as an actual antifreeze. Using it @ low concentrations with distilled water for corrosion protection,will give good results.

Honestly,I'm going to go single pass on the dez car.Gonna run distilled water ,PG coolant @20% and a single pass 18x36 rad layed pretty flat(NOT GOOD)but only place it will fit and look good while being pretty protected in a
crash rollover with 2 16" Spal fans pulling IIRC(the highest cfm they make in a 16") 4800CFM total. Hope it cools 750 hp OK in the funky location. I'll try to snap a couple pics tomorrow of the styrofoam mockup. Still waiting for the rad to come.

this is interesting cause on the zx9r I built years ago the 2 pass actually seemed to make the rail run hotter faster and single pass I went to did better but now the r1 engine rail the 2 pass did the job and I have gone that way since and now the busa runs right in the middle of the stock gauge as the stock bike did or does and the fan cycles on and off while I am on the dunes. running easy it cycles and running hard for some time it stays on longer on a 94* day as our last trip provided us!! lol I think mine is 16"x32" but I would have to measure again to know for sure. it is however mounted above the head ports so maybe gravity helps????

and it's funny you say that cause the guy in Kansas that custom builds the alum racing radiators warned me twice that this was too big for a bike motor and I just told him twice that we run pretty much wide open throttle or in the high rpm range that ap motors never see. rofl

I reused the rad from the donor car. Single pass. Takes a long time to get up to temp. Cools off real quick when the fan kicks on. My one fan moves 2800 cfm. Sounds like a jet when it starts up. You don't hear the motor over the fan.

Honestly,I'm going to go single pass on the dez car.Gonna run distilled water ,PG coolant @20% and a single pass 18x36 rad layed pretty flat(NOT GOOD)but only place it will fit and look good while being pretty protected in a crash rollover with 2 16" Spal fans pulling IIRC(the highest cfm they make in a 16") 4800CFM total. Hope it cools 750 hp OK in the funky location. I'll try to snap a couple pics tomorrow of the styrofoam mockup. Still waiting for the rad to come.

Well I spent some time and $$ over last few weeks. Really tring to kick this cooling issue.
So I moved the rad up higher, bought a bigger cfm fan. Also picked up a remote oil cooler setup. Has output for turbo too ;D. Got a small fan to put on that one too. 4 new Rigid dually leds for front/side viewing and scored 2 20" led bars for roof. Tossing the halogen lights cause I'll need the amp.

Slacker here, closer to trip more motivated I get. Should be up and running this weekend. Then to put on new roof and lights. Maybe........
The remote oil cooler adapter is slick, fits will with nice braided lines. Fan I ordered came in too large but I'm gonna give it a shot. They were out of smaller one so just sub'd the larger out of blue.
Got the Radiator moved to its 3rd location now!! kick Also have a new fan with another 500cfm. Plumbed with hard lines, most of way.
And last pic, is well cause I'm gettin a little excited. ;D ;D

Problem I have oil light on now. Common for a sec or two or maybe 5 after a change. But I think I have an air bubble trapped. ESP after studying the doom diagram. So got to chase that down. The oil cooler had cold oil while oil at filter was hot. I got to prime it better. And still have prob with battery staying charged. Even with a disconnect!! But what the hell we got 3 weeks no hurry or anything

take the terminal off the batt and if it still goes dead then your batt crapped out. isn't the oil cooler above the oil filter? if so did you pull a line and fill the oil cooler too as too start a gravity feed? they always look better with skin lol

You must be routed wrong. The oil cooler should be pressure fed and returned.

It's a adapter that sandwiches between filter and block. I would guess oil filter is pressurized? There is a bypass valve inside based on drawings in book. I layed oul cooler on ground but I'm thinking maybe the idiot oil light/pressure switch is on because of a bad air lock at either I or the bypass valve. Gonna research some today.

and what is the function of the bypass other than the obvious? I ask because if it is temp related I wonder if it can be removed for better flow for what the motor is used for now.

Its an oil relief valve. It controls oil pressure in motor. Stock looks to be 55psi warm at about 6k. Can raise pressure with shim. But I'll take a pic of diagram looks like passage to valve and oil switch are on a dead end line. If they have air trapped that would explain.

I'm thinking ,without thinking it thru(lol),you are bypassing the bypass with the aux oil cooler adapter and getting low oil pressure. Is this adapter engine specific or generic?

If you go back to pg18 you can see the adapter part of the cooler. Oil comes into back side, should run thru line, thru cooler and down to outside of filter. Pass thru filter and up the block. I dig into again this week. Took today off!!
It was a generic oil cooler setup.

Well did more diggin and seems many Kawi oil pumps have a priming problem when they sit w/o oil for a while. And I was oiless for 4-6 weeks. And to prime easy way, just apply 30 psi air to cranck case vent a few times and it will push oil thru system. So hopefully this takes care of it and no damage has been done with the low oil pressure while I was %$$#% with it. Only idled a bit, and never made any noise.

Well I be damn'd. Sure enough after about 4-5 times of pumping her up to 30 psi, oil pump primed and we have pressure and all is full and flowing!!! Now I got some hot to cool. ;D ;D FInish soldier a couple wires, and this thing will be ready to load.
Now off to trailer, flooring, new countertop, water line for fridge, and wires for a/c. One hot mofo in LS today, 102*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
