Title: subaru transaxles
Post by: dsrace on March 02, 2010, 09:48:01 PM
saw this posted on another site and thought it looked interesting. what do you guys think?

I copy and pasted this.

Finally, Subaru transmissions can be used in rear engined cars.

We have developed reverse cut ring and pinions for all Subaru 5 speed manual transmissions manufactured from 1990 to present.

These can be used in 2WD or 4WD applications. Replace your VW or Porsche transmission with a modern, compact Subaru one. These are rated to 280hp stock and 650 with aftermarket gears.

Use any Subaru motor from the EJ series with this transmission or use an adapter plate to use a Vw or Porsche powerplant. This transmission raises your engine 3 inches higher than in a VW/Porsche configuration meaning no more shortened sumps and headers.

Currently available in 3.9, 4.1 and 4.4 ratios with more to be announced soon.

More information available on www.subarugears.com

We are also looking for sales distributors worldwide. Contact sales@subarugears.com

Neat. Now they need to make flanges from the Subee splines to 930 Cv's.

The only thing wrong with this is you  have to change the ring and pinion before you can run it.  8)

Hes reffering to how RC51 rhino suggested it was used as intended with the motor in front like it was in the factory like a mid engine buggy would use it.

Like using a transmission from a VW, motorcycle engine, misc parts from all other sorts.  We try to piece all this together in a buggy and want it to be reliable.  Just not what it was designed for.  So it has been a search, test, search, test to get this stuff to go together.

I am quit interested in any trans setup.  I want to use one for my next build(shyyy wife is close)  Something with a LSD or manuel locker would be sweet.

Curious as to what issues you feel with a setup like this last one pictured.

I think the input shaft needs more/better support but wonder what else others think of it?

Saw as in seen in the past? Seen/saw to many potential issues?

That was my take on it.

1 forces a high engine mounting
2 Installation/mounting/alignment wil be difficult at best
3 Gear ratios will be FUNKY as hell without aftermarget/custom ratios
4 Trans input shaft will be trouble without a second bearing incorporated
5 etc..

You can spent the money up front and do it right or spend half of money,  have it break and end up spending more than if you would've done it right the first time. 8) 8) 8)

Ya know,I have for most of my life struggled to get the things I want. I've been fortunate the last 5 years or so and have not had to do many of the things I did in the past to get what I want BUT,i always saw the value in spending more up front to get the best overall "bang for my hard earned buck". That ALWAYS meant buying the good stuff and doing without the bling and fancy paint jobs or any of the other things that turns heads. I turned the heads tho when I ran  better, faster, longer, less overall cost than the big bux boys. Anyway ,my point is that I sincerely understand the poor folk sentiment but I also see no reason to limit your potential by trying to save too many buxon a cheaper and usually less satisfactory results.  Really ,this is not a cheap sport. Just my 2 cents.

I can agree with a lot of that but it still should not keep people from trying new things that can be done for a lesser price and cheaper at times.

Are some gonna break and fail? YUP. But some will survive and break new ground.

A little care and common sense with a build can make a lot of things work well.

True, very true  BTDT many times but you can't just ignore some basic stuff like that unsupported input shaft and expect satisfactory results. My design may or may not prove out but it does address the necessaryelements and that is how I ended up with my idea. Time will tell if it was folly or not. However the setup posted ,IMO,cannot have been successful.

I do agree that the shaft needs support. If you go read the thread on MBN (Sorry Fabr lol) you will see where I stated that.

I can see why a lot of guys remove the bellhousing. But I see it as a great support for it (the bearing mount bolted to the bellhousing). True you pay a small length penalty.

Title: Re: subaru transaxles
Post by: trans man on March 22, 2010, 09:21:28 PM
The OEM bellhousing only use a steel collar to hold the input shaft seal. The real support came from the pilot bearing in the end of the crank shaft. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Yup. I feel the bellhousing is a great mount for the front bearing to replace the lost crankshaft support bushing. This same mount would connect to the engine of choice providing the power to insure the two move together.

Sorry Fabr...re-read your post...makes sense now! You are absolutely right abouot spending the dough for the good stuff...I still fing myself willing to tinker a little to save some cash though. That seems to keep me in the shop more than out driving, I think that's why I bought another Jeep project... They pretty much fall together since you don't have to build many parts for 'em.

all toys are fun as long as we spend more time playing than on the wrong end of the good old push rope!  ;D   but if your going to build it you really need to build it strong the first time even if it takes a little longer and it will definitely cost more. I had to learn this lesson the hard way of course by simply no listening to trans man about stock vw parts in my trans axle and in the long run it wound up costing me a little over $500 more than doing it right the first time around. that and having to be towed backwards over 3 small dunes!

I just think the subee might be worth exploring a little as long as I am not just throwing $100 bills in a fire.

What about a tranny out of a Porche, 911, 914 any rear engine.  They're about the same size a Vw stuff.  Its already built to handle the Hp and torque that we are wanting to put into theat vw/or subi.  If your going to molest it to couple to a V-tech or Busa, does it matter.  Unless it rotates wrong way, in which case you just run 90+ in reverse. rofl

Epic Fail.  The Porsche trans is one of the worst. They cost big $$$$$$$$ to work on and have the smallest teeth on the syncros of any of the transmitions.   They are made for road racing where you are not making a fast shift.  Been there and done that.

I seriously think fabbr has found it but the bus box's are getting harder to come by used but they are available new! It just so happens I have a 914 transaxle and those were mid engine but like fast says after looking inside even with out the knowledge of a trans builder I could see it wouldn't take it.  :'( so then I had a $400 idea I wound up giving to my dad for his next fg buggy build 9 years ago and it is still sitting in his shop!
