Gas Tank Safety.
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:40:38 PM »
I've been been toying around with ideas on how to improve the safety of the standard aluminum fabricated or otherwise gas tank. I have always either used a standard crosslinked poly fuel cell  or fabbed an aluminum tank. The aluminum are susceptible to cracking welds or possible fracturing at mounting tabs and such;a poly tank is relatively easily punctured but able to have a fair chance of not rupturing if just distorted- even badly. Soooooo, I have a facility nearby that does rotational molding of polyethylene. I'm thinking of having the tank lined with polyethylene, using standard "racing" fuel filler, bulkhead fittings for the outlet/s. Seems like a decent option to a very high priced true fuel cell with bladder of over a thousand bux compared to an aluminum only or poly only tank. OPINIONS???????

this what you looking for?  Less than $200.00 depending on size....

JEGS circle track fuel cells are accepted by most sanctioning bodies where an 18-gauge, steel outer container with an inner liner is required. Features a spot-welded steel can that is powder coated in red and an internal pickup tube designed to extract fuel from the right rear corner of the cell. The inner liner is manufactured with seamless roto-molded and cross-linked polyethylene for strength and durability. Made In USA

Well I'll be damned . I'm needing custom size and shape and want aluminum. Great to know it'snot a stupid idea. LOL!!!

OK, another hair brained thought . How about a composite tank? I know I can build one cooler than aluminum . I'd use vinyl ester resin and a build thickness of approx 3/16'' if using standard glass mat. Be strong as hell ,the vinyl ester resin is highly gasoline resistant,225 degreee temperarure rating and ,for me anyway, just as easy or more so than fabbing a compound shaped tank with nice radiused corners all over the place.

I had to cut the molded in tank out of My Manx. The ethanol is a lot harder on the glass than gas. With the abundance of the crap and the stations not labeling the pumps it would have given Me nothing but problems.........

The vinyl ester resin is alcohol tolerant. Polyester resins hate it.

The keg should fit nicely in the nerfbar with a few brackets. co2 bottles on the other side to balance it out, frame mounted dispenser tap and cup holders ......... should be good for about 2hrs driving?
