Have it anodized. Forget the paint.

Get some scotch brite pads and give it a rub, that'll take the shine off it.

You can get scotch brite pads with an arbor to fit in a drill too if a ton of "by hand" work does not sound fun to yah.

Theres some pictures on here of the scotch brite swirls done with a drill, pretty cool.  Anodized the alum is best, but heres a paint way to make it look the anodized http://www.duplicolor.com/products/metalcast.html

Just remember that paint, sooner or later, will peel off unless you a paint made for aluminum surfaces or use aluminum specific primer.

I was hiding this, but I'll share.  Going to try it someday.  Good reading.

just a thought ..... stick a vinyl sticker over the panels, matt-clear or colours and replace when it looks shabby?

Powder coat it !! The buggy in the picture does not have one drop of paint on it.
Those are all 3003 aluminum panels that were acid etched then powdercoated.
Anodizing is a PITA, because once it's damaged, it's expensive to redo the panel. Powder is cheap and easy, and can look like clear anodizing if you use candy colours.
I have tried clear anodizing at home, but never got good results.
