Title: Sand Rocket v8 front engine cars
Post by: Nutz4sand on April 09, 2018, 04:59:11 PM
Anyone here ever go for a ride in them or better yet drive one?

Curious as to your thoughts?

I have seen one at Silver Lake and at the drags it kicked the rear engine long travels asses since they were wheelying all over and the Sand Rocket was flat gone.

I do not like how they run the engine coolant thru the frame though. To me that is making a host of other issues that has a MUCH better solution.

Anywho.  Anyone know much about them?

Looked at the plans but not sure I wanna drop $200.00 for them.

Nope, never driven one but I agree with what you said about the drags. No way will a mid or front engine car be beat by a tail dragger of equal HP. Now,in the open dunes ,if wheelies are your thing then a rear engine is the ticket and even for many desert cars for that matter. I guess what I'm saying is it depends on what the intended use is. I went mid engine because it gives a nice 55/45 weight bias approximately. I like my wheels on the ground.

Here is one for sale right now.

That's a decent deal if someone in that neck of the woods had a hunkering for it.

It take a hell of a motor to make it wheelie, but what you save in a transaxle you could do it!  Think that was sand rocket at LS a couple yrs back, running a Jag irs w u-joint axles.

asking $9k huh......hmmmmm i`m not sure he`ll get that in todays market. i do agree that coolant through the frame is a bad idea on several fronts. weigh5 distributions looks good. cheaper set up to maintain or replace but never driven or seen one in action.

He was asking ten thousand but obviously no takers on the yellow one above at that.

I was contemplating what if you used a "dwarf car" adaptor of a Hayabusa and set up a single seater like this with a inline reverse box then back to a small car IRS.

why not just couple the hayabusa direct to the diff? use the dwarf adapter to make a double joint or something and direct couple for a mid engine config still.

I have a busa dwarf car adapter if you decide to do this I'd sell cheap. New,never used.

DS I have thought of that as well. But the engine would be quite offset. By moving the engine forward like in the Sand rocket setup it would give a bit more room for the offset and the inline reverser.

Fabr Is the adaptor just from the engine splines to a U-joint or is it also the part that covers the clutch actuation cover?

What might you part with it for?

Here is the yoke that is usually used that mates to it. Good Spicer yoke.

What in line reverser have you found that you feel will take the abuse?

Fabr  Looking for the link. It is not on my new laptop but was on the old one.

It was a reverser that Yoshi had first shown (by my knowledge)  to us.

It is supposed to be able to deal with far more power than a hayabusa could dish out.

I have not tried one of course and would have to research that unit a bit more.

Roadster cycle guy I think, but talked with him bout yr back and he wasn't doing them at that time.  Pretty simple design and was to take 400hp?
Elite may be only inline, http://eliteracingtransmissions.com/categories/motorbike-engined-sub-menu/reverse-box/

Maybe some more searching...............................

All I ever saw were not up to off road abuse. On road/track use they were just fine.

Most of their use is in the UK since bike engine cars are very popular track cars there. That's what they are made for. Off road-nope. I do not know of any inline reversers that will take the pounding off road does to them. I do know of how to do an inline reverser that will though but there is no market for them especially now that SxS's have taken over.

i do too and have seen that system many times, also personally seen this system stand up over the years to a heavier sand rail  ;D ;)

That is not what I was referring to. Before it I designed a planetary in line reverser based on a readily available high quality planetary.
