Title: Odypilots' 600 Rotax Pilot
Post by: odypilots on February 24, 2009, 04:27:29 AM
After racing in a enduro that was the definition of "slop fest" last year, sucking dirty water through the air filters, and blowing up my engine, I've been working on getting her going again. Bugpac was kind enough to allow me garage space, and a bunch of help.

In the rush to make racing season in 2007, AtvNut and I cut some corners to get it on the track. The wiring and radiator mounts being the most glaring. So out came some unneeded wiring. It's still a combination of the Pilot  and the SkiDoo harness, but it's neater now. With AtvNut on the phone, we also wired in a kill switch, so the teather doesn't have to be pulled to shut the engine down.

Bug designed some brackets to use Rick S' very well thought out radiator mounting system, and Rick made up those brackets to go with his rubber mounts, that Bug then welded in. I chose to offset the radiator to allow it to stand more upright to promote better airflow through it.

I'm including a couple of pictures to show the engine cradle and mounting that never got photographed in the original rush to complete the project.

Thanks, Spec. It's been sitting too long, and without Bug's encouragement, would still be sitting. I can hear Bug's voice now, "Git Er Done!". :)

Looks Good!  Looks like there might be some shock upgrades there as well.  If you don't mind I have a few questions from my odessy ignorance.

I take it the original engine was not a Rotax....  Was it a single?  How many CC?

Is the gear/chain box we see in the rear the original for the machine?  Are you running the original CVT?

Anyone know a good source of info on these machines?  I would like to read up.  My Uncle had a yellow one when I was a kid, but I don't remember much.

As Bug said, it's a Honda Pilot fl400. My buddy, who had one, called it an 400 Odyssey, as it's the next model after the 350 Odyssey. This frame has a ATV Racing long travel kit added to it by a previous owner.

The original engine was a 400cc two stroke single.

It's the original Honda gearbox, with a custom input shaft to allow an Arctic  Cat driven. The drive clutch is the stock SkiDoo TRA.

Did you change it over from the honda motor to the Rotax?  When you say custom shaft, does someone make a kit to do the motor changeover, or is it a one off deal?

Now I see why bug was looking for more motor......  That pilot will probably whip the draks ass!

Do you know the ratio in the Honda box?  Is it a FNR or just reduction?

Yea, AtvNut and I installed it. He did the thinking!

It was a one off, then I had a couple more made for another Pilot guy.

I've heard the ratio is 9.something to 1, almost 10 to 1. It'a an FNR.

Very Cool!  10:1 and a FNR.  Sounds like a sweet setup.

We got her buttoned up today. Bug engineered a belt guard/electric starter protecter that we got on. He also welded on a camera mount for the new camcorder. I just have to deal with a carb float bowl leak, then I'll be good to go! I'll start checking into shipping costs to get me and it over to The Land Down Under so I can test it out against Bazz and his band of cohorts (I wish!).

You can sit in the pilot and we will fill the rest of the crate with brats and beers......  look like "spies like us" when they pry off the lid!

Lol, Ody is really giving me to much credit, I mainly just put the ideas in his head, actually he already had some, he desrves most of the credit for the belt guard, i just welded on some tabs and made some suggestions.... ;D

Get a bulk deal done and bring a few others over... should get a decent discount that way (all sit in your cars and come in the cargo hold, the airline will never know) ::)

Could even introduce you guys to decent beer and the correct side of the road...

Oh I forgot to add, this is the starter I bought from Pat's Small Motors(thru Spcl Ed-thanks Mate) It's a replacement for the OEM Doo's.Cheap at around $80,(OEM over US$400) bolts directly to the motor-3 bolts,no brackets, just needs a sep remote relay.Better than the piggy back type,as it's further away from the exh heat and no relay/solenoid to burn up under the Y joiner.
Also made up a black poly cone cover for it,with builtin S/S belt cord cutter attached. It is a combined effort/design with ozpilot Brendan.

I have a starter/solenoid combo, havent had any problems due to heat, and its a lot loss wiring.. and supported shaft, so no belt tearing it up...

I have the hole in the float bowl welded up, so it should be good there. Tried to move the shift lever to make room for a wrench, as it was froze up! Pulled it apart and got it soaking with some WD 40 yesterday, so hopefully that will loosen up. Fab up an air filter guard, and it'll be ready to ROCK!

Funny you should ask! I was signing on to post an update. I got everything done and took it out for a shake down run yesterday. It was running like a top... then an axle broke! Lost drive to the left rear, and first I thought the inner stub axle pulled out of the trans, but, no, broke about an inch from the plunging assembly inside the inner cup. Darn, shoot, fooey! I have a replacement axle, just need to get the broke axle out of the outer CV assembly. I hear it's a bitch.
