Title: Sand tire paddles for a Busa powered buggy
Post by: Lance-W on July 01, 2015, 09:02:05 AM
So now that I've committed to going to St. Anthony's........  I need a set of paddles.

My set-up:

Factory 1st gen Busa naturally aspirated 196hp
5x4.50 wheel pattern
Currently running LT235/75R-15 all-terrain type tires - 28.9" diameter
Sprockets are 15 tooth front and 60 tooth rear.  Front one could change there's no way to fit a bigger on in the rear.
Buggy weighs ~1000lbs

I have to run a 15" rim as the 10" brake discs won't fit in anything smaller.

So what size paddles would be appropriate or at least close to functional?  The off-road tires after last time obviously aren't gonna work.............

You need a set of 1300's.  Stay away for the plus size but you should be good there. Don't kid your self.  If the sand is wet at all at St Ann them off road tires mite just get you around pretty good.  One more idea is a set of 15x5-50 I think TERRA tires.  They are farm implement and heavy but good for the fomentation.

Sand Viper SV1100P is what I run. 9 years to failure and will be running them again. I had them when I was NA and they did a good job then as well. Maybe drop a tooth up a front if needed, but should be a lighter setup at the same height as the off-road tires so you may be good to go on gearing..

Thanks for the reminder that mine are shot, just ordered a new pair lol
Also, I have a pair of the Firestone implement tires (6 rib) I used to run up front in the sand I could bring, you are more than welcome to use them.... Would just have to mount them up on a pair of your rims when we get there. Off-road tires up front in the sand tend to fill your car and face up with sand in the corners lol

Sand viper 1100 here too.  AKA Stephen 1100.  Little heavier than STU, but a great tire for the money.

Plenty of S Cali peeps dont ride in summer, maybe you could borrow a set to "try out"?

The Sand Viper 1100's you guys are running.....What size rim?  I have 15x7's and it says in the ads that the minimum is a 7" rim.  Is it gonna make a huge difference with them on a 7" rim vs. a 8" or a 10"?

I only know one person out here that goes to the sand and and his tires are too big.............  He's running a 300zx turbo motor in a 4 seater.

15 x 8 here.  nice round profile.  Think DS has same tire on a 15 x 10 and a much flatter paddle.

X2. I think your buggy would do just fine with that tire.

i run my 1100's on 12 wide rims which are of course 15" dia. i have bead lock rings on the outsides only. i ran the 1300 sand vipers and i think those would be too much on your rail. the stu 1300 are wider than the 1100 and i think 1/2" taller but like 6 lbs lighter if that matters. they do say best on a 10" wide rim but i bet they would fit a 7" wide.  i have one that hasn't lost it paddles but is going too lol so just a thought and as long as you stay behind me  rofl i could bring the one i have and enemy's best used one and you could try them out as a matter of fact you can keep mine lol

looks good lance and as far as who is stephen i figured the english version of one of the chinese peoples names  rofl rofl  or they just figured no one would buy them if they wrote there name in chinese.

the rims look good btw didn't know american racing was made in china too and the tires look a little bigger than the dirt but the paddles can do that.
