E85 discussion.
« on: March 23, 2016, 06:19:29 PM »
Seems like e85 is great but -beware.

Check out the % range of ethanol content allowed in pump e85.

ASTM 5798 specifies the allowable fuel ethanol content in E85 as ranging from 51% to 83%.

THAT is why I ask if you guys are checking your pump e85 before just putting it in the gas can let alone in your tank.I guarantee you that with compression ratio of 15:1 in this engine I'll not be buying my e85 in the winter months for sure(always lower ethanol content in winter months) and will ALWAYS do a check by buying a gallon and testing the stuff, right at the pump, before filling a drum.

EASY as can be to test.

With the Ranger and hopefully someday the busa motor, I will be using a flex fuel sensor for timing and fuel calculations as the ethanol content of fuel changes. With the Microsquirt/Megasquirt, some guys are also taking this signal and displaying it on a gauge or phone. Really starting to like the idea of that. Some e85 stations in Lincoln can vary 10-15% on any given day. Always have the checker and the drums/tank ready to fill when ya find a sweet spot!

Another interesting discussion I ran into on another forum was "e85 brown sludge"

Yep,doing my research/edjumacating on flex fuel engine management .Seems like the only smart thing to do albeit a lot more involved that just putting a flex fuel sensor on the thing. Gotta have a lot more FI/injection mapping/tuning. For now I will be happy with 2 maps. One for 110 gas and  the other e85.

The link you posted, enemy,is about mtbe gas combined with Exx gas. Unless you are buying your gas at a marina, there is no chance of encountering that issue. It is very unlikely there is ANY mtbe gas today though. I'm serious,I believe most ethanol related issues are overblown hype intended to sell products like offered on the link.

I posted in the other thread that I forgot I'd reduced the compression in this engine to only 14:1. My crappy memory failed me.............need to check notes more often I guess.

Just condense the tailpipe gasses and create a new drink. Maybe a sandarita or something.
