Title: can am defender
Post by: dsrace on October 09, 2023, 06:14:42 AM
So I bought a 2018 can am defender hd 8. I bought because it has a full cab and heat.  I bought it to add a snow blade too and for use around the place. I have more trees to cut and it tows my 8.5x12 utility trail very well. Easy to get to the tree lines for fire wood. Also wanted something to take to the family ranch with me for various chores. The defender hd 8, hd9 hd10 all have a 2500 lb trailer tow rating. That was #1 one on the list, #2 was a cab for winter and heat. Found this one used in Yankton south Dakota last week. Ran up sat morning to get it luckily its only a 3hr drive. Apperantly they have two offroad trail riding park close to Yankton.

Was looking at new ones but damn, $28k for an  hd10. Thats just insane to myself. Yell i paid more then I wanted for this one , but resale is still crazy for some reason.  The 1000 cc is 22 hp higher then then the hd8. Same bore diff stroke on the engine plus larger valves and a cam.  The 8's handle snow plows just fine in low range.  Yep, it's making this dune trip, the heated cab will come in handy.

LMAO. Oh I knew that was coming  :m which is why I posted this now rather then just showing up for the trip with it. Yes its going down with scotts rail. No, I do not intend on taking out on the dunes. Yes my old a$$ will be driving it around with the heater on to visit the boys in cowboy and if I could get away with it, fabb'rs compound. At only 50 hp its not a dune macine.

I have heard of some contraption, looks like a snail, that is supposed to blow air into the intake manifold. Supposed to add HP, or something like that. Sounds silly to me, but maybe you could get 52 or 53 HP with one. (Then a ECU, new wiring, corn fuel, bigger injectors, larger throttle body, more sensors, larger fuel pump, finer fuel filter, better air filtration, less restrictive exhaust, paddle tires, better suspension, better seats and belts, new roll cage, more lights) Did I forget anything?

I need new batteries for the GEM. Only 1200 bux or so. BTW,you'd easily be safe running all over town with it.

I forgot about the gem.

I thought one had to have a special permit to drive through town itself?

For its intended purpose it is working out well.  I have run it down the gravel road to see what top speed is twice. Down hill, 55 mph and these machines have too much body roll to be doing those speeds imo.  Previous owner was a rancher in SD and hauled a  sprayer tank in the box from time to time . I say this cause the springs might be a touch weak in the back. Body roll is felt front and rear though. None of that matter as it won't be run that fast for my use.

I had a pair of led lights laying around so I added them to it cause the oem headlights are less then adequate for myself. 50* night, heater on high and I was rolling a window down! The heater works great.

Supposed to but I haven't seen anyone doing so. Hell, they haven't been stopping sxs's from driving on the highway for the last couple years . Golf carts go all over as well. Technically you can drive anywhere west of the highway 24 hours a day. East of the highway "requires" a permit I think is $20 and not supposed to drive after 10 I think. The popo told me I could cross over the highway to our place and not need to buy permits. Like anything, behave yourself and you will be fine.

Good to know.  I ask because at the last sand outlaws sand rail show I saw the cops stop 3 sxs for crossing the hwy.

Got a coolant leak i still have track down but I got the snow blade assy on. This is its intended use as well as towing a trailer or I wouldn't have bought it.

Crossing the hiway isn't illegal. Driving on the hiway or along the shoulder to cross is.

If we had more snow days I'd do the same but the tractor fills the bill for me IF even needed. You have my sympathy dealing with winter there.

Is that a poly blade?

It is not, its steel. The poly blades are heavier but according to a few people they don't like white rock drive ways. So I went steel and got the rubber flap on top plus markers.  I also have to 4" dually amber led pods i will add to the front bumper for plowing.  Pulls the utility trailer very nice too.

We don't get the snow we used too but it's looking like we may get a fair amount this winter. I am at the top of a hill. 6" of snow with wind creates 18" plus snow drifts in the north drive. It drifts up on the south side of the house where the ac unit is too. I had to shovel that whole South side to un bury the ac last year. 3' deep drifts in spots. I was shot after that and said I got figure something else out ;D

We did drive it to the grocery store and your place with out issue. It was actually fun in the camp ground trails but I knew going down it was most likely a social trip. Just don't want to risk my vision for one run across the dunes In scotts rail. I did, got sand in the bad eye and decided not to take another chance. The eye has cleared up a lot this last week. Like 85% better so on the right path.

One of 3 reasons i bought the defender for was to plow snow at my place. Have now used it 4 times and works surprisingly well. Not so great on white rock but def usable. Got to use it on Christmas day while the kids were still here. Grandson rode along but fell asleep in 20 mins lol

Got 9" of new snow tues and another 4" overnight. Still blowing 40 mph gusts and another 4 to 6" today. Possible additional 4 to 6" sat. The heater makes all the difference in the world! Found the limits of the snow blade and utv in the deeper snow drifts lol I drive a lesabre for a commuter car. Its not going anywhere anytime soon as seen in the pic. I don't feel like shoveling the drift and we have an awd acadia suv for snow travel.
