Dynasty 200dx
« on: April 17, 2012, 07:44:26 PM »
Just thought I'd share something I made this weekend.  I got a smoking hot deal from a friend on a Miller Dynasty 200dx and needed a place to put it.  So I made this  ;D   Now I just need to teach myself how to TIG.......

If you can gas weld you can tig.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

You got tooooooo much time on your hands my friend! NICE cabinet!  Ya,can you braze? If so TIG is a breeze. IMO,TIG is easiest weld technique there is.

MDF is awesome!
Spray it with some hammertone and it will look just like sheetmetal.
Dynasty just about welds for you.

I use Baltic birch all the time.  Great to work with but this project didn't justify the price.  Plus all the MDF in the picture was recycled after being used as a jig for another project.

Ya,I love the stuff. It only costs me about 23 bux for 60" X 60" sheet. Of course I have the benefit of owning the lumber yard. LOL!!!! At any rate it shouldn't be more than about 30 bux. I sell 1/2" MDF for 18 bux.

Any plans of adding a coolmate? I looked at a few welder a while back. Seems like air cooled for my budget, but I was wondering just how much difference water cooled would make.

From the more TIG experienced people I know they didn't believe the issue of air cooled vs. watercooled would be worth the cost for what I will use it for.....

Ya, ifyou are welding mostly short burst welds and tubing an air cooled torch will be fine as frogs hair. I built my first race car chassis with an air cooled torch from .125 4130. Never an issue. Welding a quarter around at a time, repositioning and doing another 1/4 round for hours on end and no problem. You will use a LOT more gas though to keep the torch cool. That MAY cause weld contamination especially on tube due to a venturi effect at the higher flow rates pulling in atmosphere air to the weld puddle. Not usually an issue but it DOES happen..

PS: personally I wouldn't weld aluminim unless using a water cooled torch. Pretty easy to overheat the cables at the higher amps ally needs.BTDT,bought new torch since I took out the cables AND torch. LOL!!!! To me the water cooler and water cooled torch is best and money well spent. NOT an absolute necessity tho. Haven't touched the air cooled one in many years.

PSS: IF you ever decide to go water cooled I highly recommend this torch (ball joint model). CATS ASS I guarantee. Use one and you'll never want anything else. The adjustability /adaptability is amazing.

Those look awesome!  Thanks Masterfabr, I would love to have a torch like that!   I have been using my WP-20 water cooled torch for years with no problems, but the potential versatility of this ball-jointer looks too good to not have one!   Thanks again...this solves the "what to get for my wife's upcoming b-day" question!   ;D

LOL!!! Well,I guess it beats an iron and ironing board. Good luck. One thing would be for sure, you'd have plenty of time to enjoy the torch.............................

BTW,that versatility is why I haven't used a conventional torch for a very long time. After one of these a conventional torch is just clumsy feeling. I've used other brands but the I-head is by far the best in both reliability and rugged construction. I've yet to need any repairs of any kind and have had it for about 8 years. Uses all standard collets and such.
Bought my first one, different brand, fried one end to end when forgot to turn on water before buying cooler, when doing aluminum sheetmetal intakes. Worked well but durability suxed. This I-head is so far indestructible.
