Not 100% satisfied with the audio in for the intercom.  So, had to order a line amp to increase the signal strength to the intercom.  Should be here friday.  Poop.  I hate delays.

No worries, I was lost too.

This thing:

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fa248.e.akamai.net%2Fpix.crutchfield.com%2FImageHandler%2Ffixedscale%2F400%2F300%2Fproducts%2F2011%2F9%2F161%2Fx161OVERDRP-o_front.jpeg&hash=2a14757f047ec58ba006adb5a961dd8bb286ee34)

It increases the line level (voltage in ma / signal used to transmit sound) so that the input from the head unit to the intercom can be adjusted to "balance" the system front to rear.

Think of it like a volume knob (gain) with an extra wire or two, but a bit more expensive.

Soooooo, what the problem was , was that the volume was low from the "player (head unit?)" to the intercom and the intercom could not be turned up loud enough to hear well and this thingy puts a "louder" signal to the intercom to overcome that?

Exactly.  Don't know if you ever noticed or not, but the music in the intercom is solely dependent on the signal strength.  It is like a pair of head phones.  Turning up the volume on the intercom has no effect on the music.  Only the voice elements.  You would have to turn up the IPod / source to increase music levels in intercom.

An RCA out is a weak signal to begin with as it is designed to be amplified by an external amp prior to speakers.  An IPod has a speaker out (Sort of a hybrid level - not really line level high, not really RCA low) So by using a low level RCA out, the music was muted more than I would like.  Solution?  Take RCA out from head deck, amplify signal only, then plumb into intercom.

Well, that is the plan - waiting to see if it all works.    LMAO

Cool looking system.  I just installed an amp and run my Ipod directly to the amp using a headphone jack to rca adapter cable. The iPod sits in a billet ipod holder made for off road stuff. Works great other than the wind noise drowning out the music at speed. That is being fixed with my windshield.
