Second Meziere bendix just shot craps. Broke another tooth. Two weeks from LS and the ring gear got chewed up this time. Damn thing is welded to the Fortin converter. Needs sent to BFE to be repaired SFAIK. Gonna be tight to get it back together before LS. Really ,really need to find the issue but damned if I can see anything that would be the cause. Gonna call Fortin tomorrow to see if they can shed any light on this.SOB!

Well that suck's What dose it do? I mean when it takes a crap, is it a clearance thing or a electrical thing? And the reason it always happens at the last minute is because it can.
-
Apparently a partial engagement thing occasionally that breaks an end off a tooth on the bendix. Wear pattern on bendix shows a full engagement and good alignment wear pattern but both bendixes have failed the exact same way.I've checked alignment and clearances.
Tilton Meziere starter and Fortin converter . Ring gear is welded to the torque converter.

too brittle a material or is the motor more load than the starter was made to turn?
-
that does suck and no fun what so ever
-
I wonder if an intermittent elec gremlin, not allow enough amps? Guessing that's starter Fortin rec's? Whats the comp on that motor, may need to borrow dual battery setup idea from ya Duramax. LOL

I don't know at this point. I'm sure the starter is not the cause and have my doubts about the ring gear being at fault. I'm wondering if there is a mismatch of tooth profiles but when first installed it cranked the engine over and sounded very good/normal just like first starter so I'm doubting that. Seems like everything is bolted up correctly and no misalignment. I'm thinking there is a tooth mesh clearance issue actually but there is no real way to alter that. Gotta pull the thing out to do much more investigating. The fooking Meziere bendix is around $300 a pop and the pita to remove tranny to keep having this issue.

Hmmmm,I don't think so but a good point. It's the only starter made that fits. None other to be used. Already have dual batteries. ;D Selectable, battery one, battery two or both at same time. The starter has no problem cranking it over on one battery though. 14.5:1 compression on corn.

Growing up a buddy of mine had a step side Chevy Luv with a modified Buick V6 in it. Coolest little truck ever. That thing was fast for its time.
Trouble was it broke so often, and was unreliable as hell. His dad was wicked good with boats, cars, diesel trucks, you name it. Never could sort the damn thing.
We started calling it the "space shuttle." Cause when when it worked it was bitchen. But, well, the rest of the time.....
You want I should mail you the die cut stickers for the car's new name? Three piece set or just the rear?

;D ;D LMAO LMAO
-
I know it sucks, but honestly I think you get more enjoyment from tinkering on them then driving them?
-
This isn't tinkering. It's just plain aggravating....................
-
Cant replace just the Bendix I suppose? That be too easy. Best order 2 starters, having a spare best way for not to happen again.

this is what i was referring to when i said is the starter up to the task! thats a lot and maybe meant to have a slightly larger flywheel and or a starter made a little stronger? do they sell a bendix made out of 300m as well as a flywheel? ;D ;D
-
Just add some fuel in the cranking area, maybe pull some timing.. Problem solved!
;D ;D
-
Sorry to hear, but you are not supposed to break until you GET TO the dunes. I know you had this issue last year. But you do have a small/ light weight car; we can always push start you ;D hope you get it resolved/ know you will!

I did that last time ,almost exactly 1 year ago. :) I have a spare starter sitting here now and I'll have a new $250 bendix sent out Monday. I thought having a spare was supposed to guarantee you never need it. Didn't pan out that way this time though. Dammit! rofl

Yes,the Meziere is well up to the task. It spins this engine over like a worn out ,oil burning,350 stocker. There is a misalignment or clearance issue IMO. I'll have it out tonight and will be very carefully investigating those probable issues. Honestly ,I "think" I've found the issue but will hopefully know for sure later tonight.

This is definitely a possibility. If I find no mechanical cause I would think this is the area to eff with next. On cold start it starts quite well but when up to temp it is a bit finicky. Haven't really had any time to play with it at all the last few months but I will likely pull 2 degrees cranking and add a bit of cranking fuel to warm engine.
-
has it ever tried to back fire or recoil on cranking?
-
nope,never.
-
Problem found I'm sure. Education is expensive and this little lesson cost about $1000 total. I'm a smarter moron now.

Ya,I looked back and it was almost exactly this time of year too! Can't push start a converter car though. I should have it back together unless the converter store drags it's feet getting a new ring gear on it. Considering just doing it myself .It is just a VW ring gear I have found out. Nonetheless I will be there with blue and quads. I need a break from everything one way or the other.

Sooo, what was it?

what he said ^ +1

Never, ever,no way should a person ever think aftermarket cnc parts should be right. As Don Garlits said,"I hate new parts, you have to massage them too much." It should be added that every last detail has to be checked. Take a look at this shit. This thing cost over $600 ,a person should be able to expect more QC.
-
One on L, new backup starter? WOW That's 1/3-1/2 the ring gear. And I think you used that quote before.
-
One on left is back up starter that I bought last year. The quote is quickly becoming my quote. lol
-
Knock wood!!!! All went waaaaayyyyyy better than usual. All together. Ready to rock!!!!
-
well i hope this fix's this issue for you !!!! get your cameras going for the rest of us to see!
-
Haven't had time to do any fine tuning. Hope to get a lot done next week. Vids will be on the list but not top of the list ...........
