If you had a rugged enough drill press , you can use an end mill to cut straight down through the tube.Just dont ty to cut side ways with it, but there will still be some side deflection when cutting straight down.
Not sure what drill presses would except a inch or so end mill shank in there chucks though, unless an industrial sized one which usually cost more than a good used mill does.

My boss buys all of his tools used, from companies that are willing to get rid of them for scrap price.  Hell, I'll bet 2/3 of the boss's equipment was purchased at scrap price and then he rebuilds it.  Just look at the old relics we have in our shop.  I've been there for over two years and I've only seen on brand new piece of equipment.  It's a Miller 350P Pulse/Mig Welder, and it's a $5000 piece of garbage.

The boss picked this radial arm drill up for scrap price 10 years ago.  Works like a champ!

Old iron is good iron! On the Centroid site they show a MASSIVE rotary table of something like 16' diameter and probably 20' tall from the turn of the century that now has modern Centroid controls retrofitted. Can you imagine what that would cost new today and still likely not do as good a job?

Big radial drills are the shit.  We got one at work for scrap price and it made my life a lot easier.  we had wire choppers that needed rebuilt every few months and had prolly 100 blind holes ranging from 5/8" to 1"  that had to be helicoiled or welded in and retapped.  I used to have to do it by hand, but with the radial drill press it was a breeze.  the chambers weighed about 2500# so we didn't even have to clamp them down.  Just set it on the base and move the head around.

I've got a mate who modifies turbos with his "cheap junk" lathe.
He says people tell him all the time that he can't do what he does.... almost every day.
I'm guessing it comes down to skill and patience.

As long as you take it slow, it should work out. My uncle borrowed a mini lathe/drill combo thing from a friend. It worked fine as long as you didn't take a big cut. Anything cut close to what a large lathe would take would cause chatter.
