I am pretty much self taught too. I can make the stacked look on thicker metal where I run the mig hotter, and use less wire, but not on the thin stuff. Gets it too hot. Want to fill a gap or go overhead? I do a C shape, with the opening toward the gun whether I am pushing or pulling. This works great for vertical down because you get better penetration than following the bead. Makes a nice radius too.

Vertical down is a beautiful thing with MIG. But I just plain can't do it with TIG, I have to go Vertical up.

Maybe its because they make me wear a helmet in public?

Its something about holding the rod up that I just melt it away too soon. When I feed the rod down from the top and work the torch up I do much better.

Actually the table gets in the way of the filler rod. If the piece is big enough to hang the corner off the table I can do pretty good. But the small stuff that I can't balance off the edge I have to do vertical up. Otherwise I am trying to feed the rod 90 degrees into the tube, rather than my normal 10 or 15.
