Title: hello boys, i feel the need to biuld something again
Post by: Baloo on May 01, 2016, 10:41:11 AM
Hello guys
Been a while since l posted here, well anywhere for that matter, got all busy with work life etc, anyway l need some thing to play with once more,  don't really want to make everything from scratch so considering a chassis and running gear from something with a tube frame bolted on top
do you guys have the Suzuki jimny over there ? has a cute little 4wd drive chassis and drive train, nice and light 90" or there abouts wheelbase and best of all one fell into my lap, be rude not to use it for something

Great to hear from you !!!! Yep,a lot of those little Suzuki's(samurai) are used here for rock crawlers. Pretty tough and a lot of fun I hear. Post up what you create. Always enjoy your projects.

hey Fabr  nice your still here, been a long while

yes we have samurai here too, tough little things but they are leaf sprung and I run the risk of biting my tongue off when hitting bumps at speed, the jimny is the later version with coil springs like this

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fandyhaycock003%2Fjimny%2520stock_zpsgrxscama.jpg&hash=eb9d3cb8c5d1a46e550aa48fae8acc685a85f369) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/andyhaycock/media/andyhaycock003/jimny%20stock_zpsgrxscama.jpg.html)

coil springs and radius arms just like a classic range rover only smaller and much more nimble plus they don't cut out when a dark cloud goes over  ;D

nice little 16valve all alloy engine as stock, quite popular as rock crawlers around the world

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fandyhaycock003%2Fjimny%2520crawler_zpsbgkujazo.jpg&hash=afd28ca2a6204709c628233e8bec86c8fa169669) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/andyhaycock/media/andyhaycock003/jimny%20crawler_zpsbgkujazo.jpg.html)

if I use the chassis un modified I can use it on the street over here, just need to bend up some tube and switch to a different engine,

mine was cheap as it had had a little roll over but as I wont be using any of the body then it works fine for me

heres the rough shape I have in my head, tube frame wants to stop at the back of the rear tyres and as close as possible to the front of the fronts,     will be selectable 4wd with the jimny transfer box ( same as samurai ) with low range at 4.1,  nothing wrong with the Suzuki engine except its to tall sitting way up above the front axle so it destroys the bonnet line ( Hood ? )  so going to look at a Subaru for its engine tomorrow

nope they don't offer those over here that i have ever seen.  prob gets to good a mpg so they deemed them non emmisons compliant over here lol well that and the steering wheel is on the wrong side  rofl looks like it will be an interesting project and a lot of fun. looks like a nice denali fiver you have in the shop!

Baloo!

Yea!

Samurai have a cultish following here.  Very capable rigs.  Nice ones go for pretty good money.  The Jimny coil over still has solid axles?  Should be easy to gt some good articulation, few rocks, few bigger rocks, next we have stories of Baloo on his lid.

Hi    yes the jimny has solid axles, very similar to the Sammy ones but with vacuum operated front hubs so you can engage the front axle  on the fly,  the rest of the world got coil sprung samurais around 1998
the us missed out out on them I think

the sj is well regarded over here too l seemed to have accumulated quite a collection of them, a couple of truck cabs, 4 swb's 3 lwb's one of which is a 2006 model brand new from india where they still make them, never been on the road, would be worth some coin if I could get it across to your side of the pond as l think you guys dident get many lwb sj's over there ?

unfortunately we don't get many rocks to play on here or sand for that matter we just get grass or mud  :(
you guys don't know how lucky you are with all them sand dunes  :)

so no point building an out and out rock crawler or sand buggy, have to build something I can use here
anyway will post up some pics as I go

hi boys  went shopping today, bought me a $200 Subaru forester
think I can convert the gearbox to rear wheel drive only and it has a low range built in so by the time its fed into the Suzuki transfer box I will end up with plenty of choice for gears

(https://dtsfab.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi259.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh311%2Fandyhaycock%2Fandyhaycock003%2Fsubaru_zpsxhmvjyjj.jpg&hash=a9dfc9700f8881354fcc0bdde36ae5f65ea7bd0c) (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/andyhaycock/media/andyhaycock003/subaru_zpsxhmvjyjj.jpg.html)

so its game on .....................................................

Canada got the LWB Smai's. There are a few here that were imported. They are pretty rare though.
I am currently in the process of building an 88 SWB up.
Are all the newer models that we didn't get tin tops or do they still make convertibles?

looks a bit on the "big" side   bet those 2 axles weigh more than my whole buggy will
think light weight and nimble

hi
think they make all sorts still somewhere in the world
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Jimny
my 2006 lwb is a soft top, they made cute little crew cabs too
shame they dident make the bodies out of the same steel they used for the chassis, have you ever seen a rusty sj chassis ? we haven't over here yet the bodies fall apart

Mine has very little rust on the frame. The body is also relatively rust free. There are a couple spots that just plain rusted through though. Considering they salt the roads in the winter here, I doubt this one ever saw much snow action.

So, having watched years of Top Gear, your 5th wheel isn't exactly the normal English caravan. What do you tow it with? Import a real truck with the trailer?

there is an issue with "real trucks" and the law on towing here in the uk, some folk just ignore it but I was trying to keep fully legal, will explain later off to work now

Hi
there are loads of dealers here for usa type fivers as well as European type fivers

have a look at a few of the links on this page
https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=fifth+wheel+dealers (https://www.google.co.uk/?gws_rd=ssl#q=fifth+wheel+dealers)

usa ones tend to be bigger and heavier and have electric brakes which is a bit of an issue as the law here says brakes maybe hydraulic or air operated ???

but that said there are hundreds of American fivers here, european  ones tend to be much lighter  so the smaller trucks we have can tow them legally, but bare in mind this is England our country lanes are very narrow the wing mirrors on my Toyota hilux rub hard on the hedge rows on both sides of the road on some of the lanes around here !!!!!! when you meet some one coming the other way you might have a one mile reverse up a twisty lane where you can see jack shit, not fun when tugging a fiver,  also most of the campsites have a size restriction which again limits where you can go with one
most of the ones you see on a campsite are smaller ones pulled by Nissan navara's

http://ccrv.co.uk/ (http://ccrv.co.uk/)

it was 3 years old still had the plastic covering on the seats  the cooker had never been used in fact it was hard to tell it wasent new, apart from paint was a bit faded from the sun
think it came from some where down by Miami  some one bought it new had it sited then never used it

ccrv go over there by around ten then have them shipped back here

baloo there used to be a company in canada that built fivers with the double nose like these have     http://fifthwheelco.com/celtic-rambler-2011-2014-nissan-navara/            i always like the idea of it for easier towing. they are closed and out of buisness now. it's a shame they didn't open a plant in the usa but then again prob a bunch of poeple here wouldn't think that looked good cause that's how they decide what is best lmao  ....now after looking at some of the sites in your links.....i can't imagine towing with a nissan pick up and when i say that i am referring to the nissan's we have over here across the pond!!!!! i am betting yours may have a little more power but that's a small truck for a fifth wheel imo  hell that would be like towing with a chevy s10 pick up lol i like what you did with the motor swap, i am surprised more people don't pay you to do that for them!
