It is kind of fun but it is still just an overgrown go kart. Something anyone can just get in and drive. I was surprised in how much gear noise they make though. After researching it , it appears it is normal . There are 3 torque limiters in the trans and they clack all the time. Again ,just the nature of the mini beast. It does handle surprisingly well on the hard pack. Need to make a quick LS trip to try it in the sand soon as paddles show up. Also get the block house at LS's garage doors back in operation so it can have a secure home with it's bigger brothers when there.

The Yammy turbo kit would really wake it up. If I were to buy one for myself that would be a necessity but for the kids and wife,it's just fine as it is.

The thing will run 80. Remove the speed limiter and it can hit 100.In all honesty, the best dune mod that could be done is the trans gearing reduction that is offered. For open desert or hardpack it's pretty good even though 1st is still a bit high geared.

well i cannot say i am surprised especially after buying the new place down there. your right the wife and kids will love it. i assume it has real safety belts coming and arm restraints?  scott smilth purchased one and it already had the gear reduction done and the super charger kit added to it. sounds like both make a sizable diff compared to stock.

the gear reduction for the dunes would be nice for sure. Supercharger kit allows stock internals but any turbo kits really need better rods. None of that will likely be done to this one. Now ,IF it was my ride and my only ride a 350-500 HP turbo kit with some serious clutch upgrades would be on my must have list.Of course a bunch of other stuff would be needed as well.

It has already had the belts upgraded to Beards but only 4 point. Good enough. It's a 2016 and only has 450 miles on it with 44 hours.

How about 6 points are better than the 5 points most of us have......................... ;) ;)  Honestly,4 points are good for cars with upright seating. 5-6 points are a necessity for reclined seating.

I will use 6 points for anything I build now. Much better for the "boys".

Son and daughter both bought one. Well son bought one and I'm subsiding the daughter while she finishes nursing school.  Yes the shop can easily hold them, busa buggy and the v8 . the garage can hold at least 6 quads. Of course the one Wanted out will always be at the back. 5: :m Isn't that one of Murphy's laws?

1 2016 with 44 hours on it. 1 brand new 2016 and one new 2018 . Total of $43K out the door. Hell,I have that in one trans , a set of shocks and mid board hubs for the v8 buggy.!!   5: 5: 5: 5: 5:

Damn sxs's are just glorified go karts. Can't wait to get back to the sand in a real buggy. I don't care how much fun the yxz's are (and they are fun) they just don't compare to the real deals!

so whats going to make more usable power......1000cc 4 cyl or 1000cc 3cyl? i ask as the utvs are 3 cyl's i believe and the bike motors are 4cyl. i think the rpm range is comparable but the 3 cyl makes mre tq and less hp? no matter what the empty weight of a utv is horrible.
Title: Re: Something for the Collection
Post by: dsrace on June 21, 2018, 10:00:10 AM
i agree fabr ......the utv's are fun but just don't compare. pretty much anything that moves on its own will be fun in some way out there but the utvs have a lot, right out of the box. to all of those that dont know a decent let alone quality rail , well they just dont know there a sizable diff.  i will say the utv's are very well suited for LS oklahoma. not so much for st a but def LS. still need to have wider track widths and slightly longer wheel bases or better drivers so they dont roll. LMAO

The 3 cylinder engines make a bit more torque and have a broader /flatter torque curve in general.  Yes the HP/pound is crap for sure compared even to my crap HP/pound of the blue buggy. That said with enough upgrades$$$$$ that can be easily overcome. I look at them as a fun toy that will get few ,if any, modding by me. The only thing I will possibly consider is the 45% or 70% first gear optional gearing. First gear is ,IMO,way too high and has been addressed somewhat coming with the 2019's . I really, really like rowing through the gears every bit as much as the busa buggy however. They are very similarly geared in the tranny.

scott smith bought a used one. his has had the gearing changed and a super charger installed. he bought it this way but he seems to like it. def not the northstart 4 seat sand rail he had but he seems to like it. pretty much all of the group he rides with went utv, maybe 1 or 2 that didn't.
