Clutch Basket Damage?
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:20:12 PM »
Good afternoon my mechanical masters of motorcycle motors.

I took out my clutch to put in a new Barnett unit.  After removing the disks, I noticed that my basket has some grooving where LORD ONLY KNOWS how that happened :s

Take a peek at the basket below to see if I can simply file these grooves out.  I plan on running this engine for a couple more months and then going to a Busa.  I do however want to not butcher up the basket to make it a POS that won't make it out of my driveway.

Looks like grooves on the inner hub part?  Usually its the fingers on the outside.  How do the steels and fibers look?
You can keep your CHANGE, I'd like to keep my DOLLAR.

Those wear grooves can/will cause eratic clutch engagement with new frictions. You MIGHT be OK but when replacing the frictions the wear grooves will not line up with the steels and friction locations in the basket and possible/likely cause issues that will not be pleasant. If it were me,I'd replace it.

I'm glad you pointed out the erratic clutch engagement.  I have had that happen a couple times.  I was coming over a roller, pulled the clutch and dumped it to give it some moar beans and it didn't engage right away.

For this season I think I will file it down and run it, as it will be coming out after the LS fall trip for a boooooosa.  A guy at work did that to his motocross clutch before with good results.
