Title: 4 corner weight
Post by: fabr on October 18, 2009, 08:02:33 AM
Do any of you do 4 corner weighing of your car to help determine springs needed? What's your procedure if so.

I plan to do it when I build the car with the m/c engine to vw trans by direct coupling. I will need to put more weight on left side. I will borrow scales from one of my stock car buddies. Scales will give you each wheel weight. I have books that tell formula for figuring spring rate, if you have weights and dimensions of suspension. Tim

I used to just use bathroom scales but that was for the little buggies ;D

There was a pretty good write up on MBN bout it.  Not scientific, but close.  Here's what I remember: LMAO

I weighed mine and used the bathroom scale, digital.  Also placed the 3 other tires on piece of 2X6 so the buggy remained level.  Buddy races dirt track and had one of the scales drive car on the four pads and it weigh it all up, never made it to his house :(  Most racecar shops have these scales, and would probably weigh it for a little drooool time.  Those guys love fab stuff.

Also supported my buggy on stands removed shocks and weighed each corner to get the unsprung weight.

Each front was 110, and the rear was 245 with fluids.  The sides were within 2 pounds of ea other.  Based on the ratio of front I bought 175 springs, tad stiff but was quite pleased.

Your buggy is too fat, LMAO.  Figuring 60/40 split on weight you would have to come in at 1300 lbs total to not max out a 400lb scale.

Easy fix. I'll make 2:1 ratio platforms for the rear if needed. Not hard to do at all. You have seen the 4:1 mechanical ones haven't you that some low buck stock car guys use?

Says he sold over 60, surely he not fooked up that many times?  I saw some 400lb digital one for like $43, but they want 20 to ship it, probably ea.  Spec need a scale so he can ship out those goodies. ;D

I know nothing about them so some could just be crap.  Quick search:

There is something going on but bottom line is that the price is very attractive. I'm guessing it is a factory closeout, soon to be discontinued model change or whatever item. I don't really care, price is right.

Well the first 4 just showed up. Very sturdy construction.  Very happy with them. I stood centered, off center and on each corner. All weights came up within 1 pound. I was concerned about the ability to handle accurate weighing if the scale was not perfectly centered under the tire. Shouldn't be any problem at all.

Keep on a hard floor for best result.  Just let the wife stand on it, she'll tell you if #$$% thing is accurate. LMAO

Still think it was a good buy, and definitly think four scales is better than 1 and swapping it around.  Should be able to put the display up on tire and read it with you in seats.  And you can always use to sell nails by the pound M-F at work. ;D

It is important with ANY scales used to have them all at same height.

Talk about timing....... These came up for sale on another board yesterday for 50$ Of course I had to buy them....

They are 4-1 ratio so each corner will do 1200#'s. I checked one by standing on the scale itself then with the pad and they're pretty damn accurate.

Yup I saw those also. Great find.I just don't need 4:1.  I plan on doing a 2:1 ratio for the rear like that with the scales I bought. Just remember that positioning is very important with that type of setup.
