GM rear axle questions

Ok, im not an expert at everything, only most things.... ;D If i was My name would be Masterfabr...

Anyhow my pinion seal is leaking on my van rear axle, can i just unbolt the yoke and replace the seal? Gm lash is set with the pinion yoke and washers correct? as long as i put it back the same way, will i be good?

Yes, it should just pop out and the new one can go in with a little RTV or "gorilla snot" LOL...

But i just re torque the yoke and call it good? any idea of the torque number?

Did the seal just go bad or does it have a reason to be leaking?

You tow with that thing and if there is wear in the pinion bearings it may be needing a complete overhaul (cheering you up yet??  ;D )

Have to jack the rear end up so the tires are off the ground (no load from it being in park) and see if you have any side play in the pinion shaft yoke area.

Also how much backlash does it have?

140k I guarantee it has some play... ;D Id buy a ford, had a ford van actually. I stole this van, had to buy it, I dont have a preference, ill drive ford or chevys....

You are fine with just replacing the seal and torquing the yoke back on.Done it several times when I was wrenching for a living. The bearings are separated by a "crush sleeve" that doesn't crush.You can't over torque the nut as far as the bearings are concerned.

Yup, what Fab said! Although I would keep the torque "gun" moderate just for safety sake!
