Of course they would.  I have not seen that for a number of years - almost 40 - brings back some memories for certain; but the word "master" was a common "title" and my grandmother would mail to me using that as my "title."  Assuming the postman knew that, they likely just thought the boy had a sur name of "baiter."  Course, I think you are 40 years from 13, so it has likly been 40 years for you as well.
