So, for the day gig I am a road warrior. Average 5,500 miles a month. 100,000 miles in 18 months. Obviously I always have one foot in the next car. That means the single greatest expense is depreciation. Lots of the compacts / midsizes now a days have turbo fours with CVTs. Not a fan of either for 150,000 miles before offing them. Jumping to a 6cyl n/a with an auto increases buy in by about 10k. And when you realize that 10k is spread out over 24 months, that is about $400.00 a month. Ouch.
I have avoided CVTs like the plague. Don't like the wind up feel. Some now have electronic "shift points" to at least make them feel like true automatics. Some manufacturers like domestics, Hyundai and Mazda seem to avoid them. Clearly others like Honda, Toyota and Subaru embrace them. It is curious to me that Honda and Toyota embrace them given their respective reputations.
Anybody here have any experience with them? Good, bad, or keep avoiding?
