still waiting on custom shower base.  Probably another 3 weeks till it's here.

Huh?  Tile guys not water proofing custom pan?  Why not?  We are ordering things up for new bath redo and tile guys will run pan up walls.  Why base instead of pan on site?

No way in hell would I fab a pan . Way too many ways to fail. We actually sell Schluter shower systems ,one of the best there is. We also sell Onyx showers. I'm going one piece onyx base with Schluter waterproof system on walls covered with ceramic. I'm actually doing a steam room. 3 foot by 8 foot,6.5 foot tall. I LOVE hot ,long showers. Adding steam is the cat's ass!!!!

I prefer the membranes.  Cement board backer on walls and liner w/ mortar base.  Just my personal experience.  Besides we are using smooth river rock for the floor.  Feels nice like a little foot massage.

The pans often times fail as folks rarely support them adequately.  Hairlines at drain from flex.  Then the pan also flexes at different rate than walls.  Mostly an issue on panel walls.  Confident that is not an issue for you.

I've been selling all types for about 35 years now. I think I've seen them all. I am completely aware of the issues with all as well. Yes,I much prefer the look of rock, etc but I wish long term durability. I'm going to live to 100 ya know.  You should seriously look into the schluter system for the pan though. That vinyl liner is not the best way. It is OK but not the best.I'll stick with the onyx base myself. All a matter of preference. How long is your installer warranting your base? Mine has a 10 year warranty and we have never had one fail -ever.

Warranty?  Don't know, don't care. Will say that the GC will warranty it for a long time, willing to bet 10 years P/L.

Base is not the pricey part.  Access and egress is.  Homeowner's covers that.  What I am seeing is a 10 year life on pans, typically on installs with out slab, (2nd floor, etc) and 20 to 30 on site built.  Often time the caulking fails, degrades adjacent areas and it gets pulled. Effn people never think nothing needs you know "maintenance."

Like you say, we all have our preferences.  I doubt I will out live the shower.  If I do, well bully for me.

stop being stubborn and investigate the schluter system in lieu of the vinyl pan liner.

I am good with that btw.  Memebranes have come a long way of late. Good product.  Just don't like the Onyx pans or fiberglass pans of any sort.

I hate the look of onyx and there are no real quality FG pans today. I will put an onyx base and a quality pan system in the same category though. With a traditional pan though there is still the issue of it never fully drying out. That is why the drains for vinyl pans are designed to drain away water that gets down to the yinyl as it will definitely do. With the schluter system however, the membrane is actually bonded to the drain flange with no way for any water to get under it as with a traditional pan. Seriously, look into it. Study the details. I know you are a very smart guy and you will see the superiority of it over a traditional pan system.
Are you having traditional sanded grout used or epoxy?

Don't even get me going on tradesmen.  I am bringing guys up from Phoenix.  Cheaper to pay them travel than deal with the locals and I get a better product.  Elk season rolls around and good luck finding anybody here who will work.  Then they all complain there is no work.

Don't know on the epoxy fabr.  Here is the deal, GC in Phoenix I do a lot of work with is lining up the best of his best and I get it at his cost.  (I "sell" / refer about 400 / 750k a year for him.  Been a friend for 10+ years. Solid guy.  )   The price of shit is getting retarded stupid.   Hoping to keep it under 20k.  We are not moving walls, drains etc and it is still a 20k project.  It should be nice though?
