Dip your car?
« on: August 07, 2013, 07:22:58 AM »
OK, I have been considering doing this.  Plasti Dip the whole damn car.  We are going to be doing it on the marine build.  Reported to hold up great to off road.  Any thoughts?  Lots of videos on you tube from these folks here:

The guy that is painting the Marine Baja is a fan - here are some samples from his face book:

It'll go as quick as it came in.   Just like the flocking did.   Must say it is much nicer to take off when you tire of it then the flocking was.  Could you call this a car condom in a can?   rofl

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

After watching how easy it is, I'm thinkinh about doing the bumper, side fairings and front of my hood. The rocks and sand tear the paint up fast.
Hmmm

I watched a bunch of vids about this. I think the clear 3M stuff would be the best thing overall.

Man I'd like to thow some sand and try to beat off some paint.  ;D ;D

I was pricing some vinyl wrap, full printed stuff, they cover it with a clear to protect print.  Same clear could be put over paint too.  So my local instal guy says.  Rear suspension seems to take the worst sand, wonder about a 2 part epoxy?

Even epoxies will blast off. Any hard coating will easily be blasted off.It will last longer but will still fail. PC fails also. Only tough, rubbery type things resist blasting well.I'm gong to use the 3M stuff I think when doing final finishing.

That's the problem with my Volvo. $11,000.00 of body and paint last yr and it is trashed already. Good thing it was insurance money. Amazing how much damage a blown steer tire can do.

DW - what do you have to loose by trying the dip?  Might as well give it hell.

I watched the video and my only concern is it looks like it peels real easy. Does it dry with better

Guy that is doing the baja says it will hold up real well.  various videos of pressure wash etc and it stays intact.  Try the bumper and see how it does?

I used the spray can truck bed liner, ruber like, on old green cars trailing arms.  Did pretty well.  And that car would throw some sand.  rofl rofl rofl

I like the dip for the suspension stuff.  Slick idea.

We got a family here in Wichita that went into that.  Son dose all the work and dad and mom supply the money.  They did a story on the news about it and one of the things they pointed out was you could peal it off in time to change colors.  So to answer DW's question It don't ever really stick permanently to the finish.  So I'm going to say that wind and what ever will make it peal here and there.
