I'll get you some options tomorrow at work.
We build and install overhead rail systems and jib cranes. I also have contacts with other large equipment installers. Is your plan to run an I beam trolley on this beam?
48' is pretty long also. I don't think we've ever shipped a beam over 45'

It'll run on 6" I beam rails supported by 4" sq tube legs.Same as the 30' span one in the other half of the shop. The 8" concrete floor rests on 24" x 24" footings. I think it'll hold.

I'd REALLY appreciate that.I know it's a long span and not be feasible for me but I really hate to do it in 2 shorter spans but that may be what I have to do.If it's not too much trouble it would be nice to know what would be required for a 32' span also.Yes an I beam trolley will be used. Thanks for the help. 8)

Ok, what is the weight per ft. on your 6" beams and what is the span on your 4" tubing supports?

I don't recall what my existing beam spec are. It's been 25 years since I put it in but the supports are 12' O.C.. Ya wanna spec that stuff too? I'd reall like to space these supports on 20' centers if possible. My original gantry is good for 1500#'s .I really only need about 2000#'s capacity now that I think about it with a reasonable safety factor of course.

Yah it really should be looked at too. That's why I would like to know how heavy your runway beams are.
If you don't know the weight, just measure the overall height and the width of the flange. Also the center web thickness and approx thickness of the flange. With those dimensions I'll know exactly what you have.
Then I can also get you a recommendation for the column spacing. Ill run all of this by one of our installers and see what he says. Especially about the availability of a beam that long. Is the 48' to the center of the 6" beams?

I haven't bought any of the materials yet. THe  actual dimension I have to check but it is no more than that.

I just talked with a crane installer and he said that you would need a W24"x68#
I beam to safely do 3000# over a 48' span. This is a wide flange Beam. (9")
you can get I beams delivered up to 60' lengths. He says most companys
deliver free of charge on beams that size. There are a lot of things you need to
consider though, like your hoist weight and trolley weight. Is the hoist electric? Will it be
power driven on the bridgeand runways?

You may want to contact this company: http://www.gorbel.com/
They can size a system for you.
