Our whole problem arises from the common theme of career politicians that pander to those that have their handout looking for the free ride-in effect the voting majority. It is a politically calculated thing that increases the numbers of the  "what you gonna give me" to the point that there is no stopping it. WE,the people, that are successful and self reliant are the MINORITY here!  We,the successful, those that are the backbone of the US  are in no position to change anything. Now ,artie, how do you propose  we start getting people to realize that the free ride is a ride to ruin? THAT'S the question to me anyway.

It is a great question....Im afraid I dont have the answer mate... Id like to wave the magic wand and have your economy back on some sort of even keel and that isnt so magnanamous as it might seem..its also self interest driven...your economy is teh biggest single financial entity in the world...... it effects mine to a some degree....

I think part of teh answer is that we are driven by the need to be 'Growth Economies'... if we have periods of zero growth we panic... seriously whats the problem of remaining stationary for a time? I cant see it yet when we have to quarters of zero growth in succession its labelled a recession.... scaremongering? I dont know...

Point is its your economy, its sick. Your pollies arent doing teh hard things that it will require to fix it cause those things will also stop them getting re-elected.....

We were in a similar position in the seventies and early eighties (on a much smaller scale of course...) The gov of teh day 'created' a recession. They told us about it before they did it... the called it :the recession we have to have" (Paul Keating). It hurt. Very badly.. but it worked and we have enjoyed a financial bonanza ever since. Even with teh latest downturn we didnt go anywhere near as low as other countries and its simple because our economy and our banks are strong....

Well, its a long winded story but that labor gov knew they were committing political suicide but they knew what was right for teh country and did it... result? We are number four on the world living standards listing.... thats no accident....

We did it....

Its your turn.....

I can't disagree with that but IMO, and I'm likely wrong, but with 10+ times the population here and knowing the petty short sighted nature of US politics and voters that we can't/won't pull it off till complete collapse or nearly so forces us into making those hard choices. HELL even our esteemed dimwit of a vice president says we have to spend our way out of bankruptcy. We;; maybe so but WE NEED to spend money we HAVE and not borrowee money.Somehow they, the politicians, just can't grasp that and so long as there are no term limits NEVER will. No need to.

Great post Artie.  ;)

I must agree.  I also believe you are correct that greed is necessary to drive a growth economy.

People here still believe that the Government can fix all their problems.  Most of them aren't smart enough to be responisble themselves, let alone demand it of the government.

Voices are speaking up, but it may be to little to late.  I fear if there is a correction from the current direction, it will be to small to fix the problem.  People love to hear that someone will save them.  Right to the point of following that someone over the cliff.  :P :P :P

As most of you know, my work is in the financial services sector, thats why Im a little passionate about this stuff.

Most of you think that what your gment is doing (or not doing) is your business. You are Norte Americananos, and its your gment. The rest of teh world should butt out. And I say thats fair enough.

BUT... there is always a but..... your governments (in)actions are making life difficult for other economies as well...

I do have the answer... its not funny and it will come with a hell of a lot of pain for you guys and the rest of the developed world... ist a mild form of socialism (your sig line is quite appropriate Eng).

If you were a small business and your debts far far exceeded your income with no prospects of reversal...what do you do?

You declare bankruptcy... unfortunately if you guys do this nationally... you will crash a lot of other destabilised economies as well (and I mean CRASH) .... perhaps thats short term pain for long term gain..... (hard call)

I think your choice is simply to CHOOSE when to declare bankruptcy...if you dont it will choose its own arrival... i hope it doesnt come in my lifetime (or my childrens).

Strangely enough if that did happen we here in Aus would probably fare better than most as we are predominately self supportive. Yeah we do import but most of that could be locally produced simply not as cheaply as the Chinese communists.

Maybe we shoudl erect a huge fence and ignore the rest of the world.... (im sure some of you on here would LOVE that...lol)

Voodoo, for what its worth, I do respect the fact that you pay your way and meet your resposibilites. If everything you have said in here is true you are one of the minority. Please dont feel that Im attacking you (Im not attacking anyone for that matter), yeah I did get shirty at ya but it was more at your reluctance to accept whats wrong with your country. I guess furtehr to that is teh fact that I do believe that the USA is one of the great countries... thats what makes todays reality so sad....

I am betting that Voodoo along with so many of us DO know whats wrong here.

The problem is that even there are not enough of us pissed off "enough" yet.
One person going to a congress man or woman will get NOTHING done unless the reason you are there is (This is just a for instance) to get a new law passed for/against a guy who raped your daughter. Why? Cause people will remember that and vote for the person who pushed it amde a big deal out of it.

But for now too many people here DO knwo whats wrong. True they are still hoping the ones who should WILL do whats right and stop the runaway juggernaut that is ruining this country.

But in reality its becoming no different than the ole Tea party times.

Our G-ment is ignoring the Constitution. Becoming just like the kings of old.

Other G-ments are right in i with them. You comment that our G-ment is making it difficult for other economies as well.

That means those countries G-ments are no better than ours. This was not a surprise or something they did not see happening. They were reaping the whirlswind of money and did not care nor likely do they. Thier bank account have gotten HUGE too.

Plenty of blame to go around. Just need to start the real blaming.

Your mission isn't to dive feet first into hell, but to make sure its crowded when you get there.
