help, 2000 f-250 super duty
« on: February 22, 2009, 04:14:07 PM »
my dad has a 2000 f-250 super duty v-10. starting about a month ago, it has done this wierd thing about 4 times.

after driving down the highway as your coming to a stop sign, slowing down getting ready to stop and it bucks and lurches forward and then stalls. exactly as if it was a manual and you didnt push the clutch in. (i swear up and down its the torque converter not unlocking) then it doesnt wanna start, untill you try a few times. it did it twice while i was riding with him.. then it didnt do it for a month. he took it in and they couldnt find any codes but replaced the idle air control. they told him theres nothing wrong with the converter. the unhooked his cruise control and tried telling him that was it to..  then last thursday it did it again coming down a steep hill in town, and it jumped and wouldnt stop even when he put all his weight on the brake. he came within 6 inches from hitting the car in front of him. yet the mechanic swears its not the converter.

just imagine drving a manual shift car and coming to a stop without pushing in the clutch, feels exactly the same.  i know that damn torque converter isnt unlocking when it happens.  so what the heck should we do guys? need help.

It's the torque converter.  I have heard of it happening to others.  I just don't remember if their is an easy fix.  I will consult the resident ford guy tommorow.  But I am sure others will chime in.

when gm cars do it, they have a electronic lockup torque converter, we unplug the transmission, it throws the check engine light tho...

he doesnt want a bandaid. wants it fixed.. he refuses to go to any other place in town, due to the fact all others are rip offs. the place he goes to, said they "called ford" and its defenitly not the torque converter, just not sure what it is..   im bout ready to kill some mofo's.. i told my dad that im sticking to my guns about it being that and ill have the last laugh.

I asked a buddy of mine (ford service tech) what that could be, he said that is the torque convertor clutch NOT disengaging.

He suggested taking it to a Ford trans specialist and telling him your story, only the torque convertor can do that. You may have a sticking solenoid, a bad ECM or a bad torque convertor clutch. It is impossible to tell you which one it is from here, but definitely one of those things.

Solenoid is part of the solenoid block in the trans pan. Not too difficult to change. Although he has never seen one stick, but it's possible.

Based on that sounds like torque converter?

Just my pea brain $.02 do you know the last time the tranny was serviced? Is it possible this is gum / varnish that gets worse with temp changes?  Would that be possible at all?

I'm with Yummi and his buddy.  The converter definately sounds like it's not disengaging.  That doesn't mean it's the problem though.  could be ECM or solenoid that is actually the problem. Like Yummi said.  The converter only does what it's told...

IMO it's a control problem.
"There can be no divided allegiance here.  Any man who says he is an American,
but something else also, isn't an American at all.  We have room for but one
flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is
the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a
loyalty to the American people."
