Title: Little Sahara Spring Ride 4/20-25(All DTS members welcome.)
Post by: fabr on January 21, 2015, 06:48:12 PM
What's the consensus on LS or perhaps a St.Anthony trip? Beginning to have sand withdrawals. This addiction shit sucks.................... ;D I'm up for either with the DTS group but will be doing both at least a few times @ LS this year. St.A will be whenever the other group decides.

Ya. how about a week earlier.  Say April 15 to the 19th? Just trying to get as many of our people there as possibly. Going to have about five maybe six subi cars there at that time.  I could do the 17th to the 19 with my grope and then 20 to 24 with you guys.  But can't do both.

glenn i can do what ever dates and i believe enemy as well however april 15th puts us right behind snake hunt...not sure that sand won't need a couple weeks to recover from that?  if you say it will be good smooth riding then i am in for april 17th dates although that is a short trip so i would be there that mon or tues rather than friday the 17th or if need be  the 20th thru that sat?

Fast forward to 4:21 in the video.  They are playing just to the right of Devils dune.  At 5:00 or so you get a good shot of the face of Devils.  It has the two or three clumps of brush on the right side of it.

Well I'll know more if I'll have a car by the end of the this week.  Looking more like I'll need to have a spare 3.0 Subaru ready to put in at any given time.  Seems that the heads are a weak spot for these engines. Took my car to OutFront for service on the CV's and CV boots and some more engine tuning and they found a cracked head.   But April 16 17 18 19 are looking like the days I'll be able to make it to LS.

No such thing as better heads.  What you get is what you run.  Hopping to send driver up to OutFront next Wednesday to pick it up. Everything about my motor is stock.  I can get better pistons and rod's.  I have located a JDM motor on ebay for $1300 with only 55k on the clock. I am thinking about getting it and going through it this coming fall and winter. Make it's maiden run for the spring 2016 dts run.

You guys sure you want to go that week? Snake Hunt this year is 4/10-12. Lots of people will still be there or just leaving on the 13th and the dunes will be shit for sure. Doesn't matter to me though. You guys call it.

Your fair weather member would of suggested May 3-11 but hey I will work the weather out for your dates as a courtesy. :q :q :nw I will also put a call into Zephyrus to smooth the sand for you guys. Going to miss my spring sand fix. I hope I make it until Sept with my sanity. Just FYI, our Fall dates are Sept 11 - 20 for those that wish to join us. Sure had a good time chasing you guys last Sept. Maybe DS can actually keep up this time and John can keep the steering intact.

I expect some good vids to hold me over!!!!!

2 week roll call!

 LMAO LMAO LMAO
Who ready to roll out...................

OK put all the panels back on last night.  Got some of the wiring cleaned up. Got the radio to working, found out they had unplugged it when they put the auto fire system in at HRT. Got the seat slider cleaned so I can pull the seat froward now to check the fuel level gauge. Waiting on all my CV and shock stuff to come in.  This car's shocks were supposed to have been tuned by ED (Pound Sand) at Glamis last year.  Well he must have forgotten these two because they had no oil in them.  The line on the shock barrel is where it came to.  The shock had to be over heating, you can tell by how the shaft is so blue.  The valving was way off from what it should have been at, #50/#70 although that was printed on the shock I don't think that heavy of a car should only have #50 compression.  Even with the by passes.   Don't know if I am going to like having two plus inches of spacers in the shocks but that's what it is going to take to stop off my wheel travel at 22* without limit straps.  If all goes will I should get a day trip in next week.

My car fired right up. Found a crack in the mid board plate. Needs fixed. Should be pretty simple to do while servicing the mids and cv's. Goint to revalve the rear shocks while at it. Spent all day today replacing all the POP RIVETS the  builder used on the trailer floor. About 1/2 were either missing or nearly sheared off. Using real trailer floors screws . Should be last time floor needs attention. Also getting a bunch of stuff hung on the walls instead of being a cluster eff on the floor. I hate clusted effs.Don't look in my shop right now though!!! LOL!!!!!

fwiw mine fired up at midnight last night lol soooooooo much smoother at idle and quieter than before. to answer a question about the fmu from rcc turbo i am running that you don't like fabr lol, they are the third gen ( i know that doesn't change your opinnion lol ) and they do not use a needle on a washer to increase from 6to1  to 12to1 it looks like it is a 12 to 1 rising rate and the set screw is actually a bleeder jet to back psi off to lower the rate of rise.  but hey i was just happy it fired off and idled soooooo smooth and quiet!!

well i am going to have to cut some ruts today to get the camper moved up with the white rock is wide enough to load rail the down side is it is not level there so not a real fan of turning fridge on for an extended period while it is parked there.  my rail will have to have the  rest of the tunning done at the dunes. it looks like a zebra after the 4 pass's down the road and through the yard lol i hit 10500 rpm on the gravel yesterday, twice just to make sure and i saw 12.2 on afr and 7 lbs boost. not traction on the gravel at that point so no real load either. also running on new front and rear steel sprocket and a new chain. that aluminum sprocket didn't last but made 3 years for me however given the fact my timing was off 10* that sprocket never saw the power of a 1300 more like a 750cc at that point lol hard telling how long it would've really had lasted.  i will pull the center out before idaho and repack the bearings since i have not done so in 3 years and i'll do the cv's while i am at it at that point.

Carl has the crown this run!!
As for me..... Jeffco go boom.
Again.
But it was on the last day, so it wasn't as painful as the past internal explosions. This boom is something entirely different than the last detonations, I will get the box pulled tonight and report back the findings...
Have some figuring to do if I decide to keep reverse...
Other than that, had some awesome runs with everybody and put myself in a food comma a few times with all the fine cooking and icecream!! YUM!!!!
Thank you all for another amazing week in the dunes!!
I have some pics I will get up tonight.

Well I thought I was going to feel better seeing a new video to hold me over until Sept. But, I think it made my dune withdrawal worse.  kick

Glad you all had a fun safe trip. No pile ups, no downed trees, no pipes.

Seems like I was the only car running with out a cam.  Never took the go-pro out of the trailer this time. Need to step up and go with the Replay.

Replay cam and hardwired remote control is the cat's ass!!!!! The cam just unscrews from the remote socket. Everything is totally waterproof without any goofy case for the cam.

Well got the car all torn down last week end.  Pulled both the fuel filters and opened them up. Nothing there to make the car run like crap like it was.  They were clean, no sand nothing.  I pulled the injectors and took them in for a check and clean.  They could be the reason but I am doubtful (see chart) they are 100% the reason the car started running like crap.  Putting new plugs in tonight and should be able to start it up.  Run a compression check and I definitely have one cylinder that is low.

#1 120 lb   #2 123 lb
#3 112 lb   #4 122 lb
#5 125 lb   #6 130 lb

Going to run a leak down check tonight

well according to the chart looked like 3 dirty inj's and ya that one cyl is down more than most would like to see. i always thought more than a 5 psi varience on a gasser then it was time to think about a rebuild but probe 10 psi would be a better margin. did the new head go on 2 4 6 cyl's?

Ya,I like bringing up the rear more than leading . I get to see what's going on that way. I really don't like setting the pace. I always feel like I may be pushing others when I lead and then I just go too slow. I'm sure you have all seen me circle around to the end of the line more than once.

Well new plugs and cleaning the injectors did the trick.  Car sounds clean and crisp.  Talked to John at OutFront and he thinks the e-85 mite be too dry here in the midwest.  Said to run some injector cleaner fluid in the fuel. Something like lucas.

fast you said you like the looks of the sand bullet rails that were there so here's a 4 seater they made. i wouldn't ever build a 4 seat bike powered but someone must have liked them.

Get that jeffco apart yet?

yes we did friday night and i am going to upload the raw footage to youtube in a few and post it. talked to shawn at jeffco and he said jon is only the third person to snap that shaft.  sounded real when he said it lol but since jon just got this back 1 year ago and only has three trips on it shawn said he wants to verify that and if so he will warranty the parts.
Title: Re: Little Sahara Spring Ride 4/20-25(All DTS members welcome.)
Post by: fabr on May 03, 2015, 09:19:47 AM
The reason he is only the third person to snap the shaft is because there aren't really that many trans out there. It's not like any of us are putting out shit loads of HP. I mean, realistically,we aren't making but 220,maybe 240 HP and the torque is almost none.  rofl  Add to that ,enemy's car is light weight. Wheelies or not,we just aren't making any serious power.Oh well,if jeffco is fixing it on their dime,I guess enemy can get yet  another partial trip out of it.................

i agree one would think that box capable of a lot more and the only thing i can think of is the pounding they take from the woops or choppy ground otherwise heat maybe? but jon has figured out how to get the heat way down in the box. the weakest link in the box up until this last update was the bearing in the idler gear and his custom gears weren't strong enough then he got with weddle to strengthen up the gears and now they seem to be real clean with no visible signs of wear. nothing will beat what you've designed but it will be interesting to see how the next few trips do with this box. he got 3 trips out of the last tear down lol  but after you see the video you'll know why so soon this time anyway. you are right we are not putting out much of any tq and little enough that a fully weddle built t1 trans is rated for, hell the rate the fully built t1 w/weddle gears to 200 ft lbs tq. which makes me wonder why transworks couldn't get that unit right!!

fabbr did you stop and take a look at the sand bullet rails with the gear one reverse box's? i installed one for a customer back when they first came out. poor machined parts kept it from running even once before it was shipped back to be fixed but i liked the concept of it. direct couple however that love joy coupler was never strong point imo. i think they could've came up with a stronger way to couple them. had some other snags installing the unit and had to get with sand bullet 5 or 6 times along the way to work with them to figure it out as they hadn't yet either lol i won't bore anyone with those issues but in the end when the box kept popping out of forward and reverse they finally just told my customer who lived 30 mins from them it was because the unit wasn't installed in one of there frames so they weren't going to warranty it!!! had to put a stout lock on the shifter to keep it in gear.

are the rpm box's straight cut gears?
Title: Re: Little Sahara Spring Ride 4/20-25(All DTS members welcome.)
Post by: fabr on May 03, 2015, 11:40:08 AM
Didn't look at the trans. RPM are straight cut gears. Straight cut carry a little less load than helical, make noise but with the advantage of no thrust loads to deal with. Easier to design from that standpoint and fewer bearings to fail in the unit.

Will the results of the video gained me one more X on the tow strap.  What is that now three? lol.  But you have to admit it was a nice clean pull this time. ;D

lol that was an easy pull back and that pic lol

as best as i can tell the split washer drops into that groove to retain that gear but no snap ring in the other groove. shawn said he made a change to that groove so we'll see as he said if it was indeed last year he rebuilt it that he will warranty the shaft. it really looks like it has been fractured for a while from the discoloration from the oil and i believe this is the 4th time.

well what shawn said was he looked back and it was 2 years to this date he rebuilt it and he said it was parts and labor free now if i remember enemy had to pay him something but then again he said enemy was the third guy to snap that shaft then today he said fourth. i corrected him on that and he said right 3rd or 4th but in the end he said he would go out of business if he kept warranting everything and since it has been two years and since he is putting a lot of power ( yes " a lot of power" ) to it over what it was origanally designed for he can't warranty but he would sell him the parts cheap or at cost. $214 shipped for the shaft and 3 bearings and a screw. now that shaft has been broke a while and it was broke last time it went back and wouldn't have been seen if not magnifluxed and i had to ask on the diff bearings and sure enough those were not changed the last two times he had it for rebuild according to his computer so as far as he could tell they were original from 9 years ago? enemy      so really not much that can be done but buy the parts for now. to be honest i don't know how many reverse units will continued to be built with the utv craze. the gears look good so that is a big step with the tappered bearings he swapped out too and the extra support of that bracket. it does only have 3 trips on it and i do believe that shaft took a hit from the gear when the beaings let go twice and knowing that i would've thought he would just send him a new shaft but i can understand not staying in buisness continuing to warranty those box's but the origanal hp claims exceeded what enemy has put to it and even what shawn told me brian at sand fever was putting to them ( his box's at 350 hp) on dyno so don't know what to say i guess.

Yes ,I do. It's never chattered or given me a minutes worry. HOWEVER,,,,,,,,,,,it just might be my noise. Need to delete it. Need to check the clutch before St.A anyway. Gonna be the first thing I do. I can do that without pulling engine.

hell if you think about it this way too .....enemy has chinese 1100 sand viper paddles and from day one the paddle will fold over with your thumb so nooooooo way the power has ever made it to the ground like it would with street tires on the street. i have had hopes for this box because i like what it is but i have said it before and i will say it again, fabbr has the best design  to date imo! heavier rail with stu 1300 paddles and the hahn turbo. seen more sand time on different dunes with bigger dunes and what is this 4 years now fabbr? ran the box out of oil a couple times and just topped it off.  from the beginning the idler gear bearings have been a problem for enemy and gears for others and he finally got with weddle to get the gears stronger and figured out double tapered bearing for the idler gear rather than the roller bearing jeffco originally installed and it was holding till the shaft snapped.  for 95% of rails w/o or prob even w/ turbo's it would prob be a damn good choice for those that want open diff.

I couldn't agree more. Yep 4 years, ran out of oil for who knows how long for sure. At least one trip. I can't complain. Same basic weight as the jeff and a selection of final drive ratios.
