the part that puzzles me his what and how he will attach to a cable to put it into reverse. he explains it but i can't follow i guess.

Theory and practical application are sometimes difficult to bring together. I'll just say,wait and see. You did notice he was basically asking for orders yet it hasn't even been tested. Kind of putting the cart before the horse IMO. If it works well and is durable ,I'd say it is a good concept. Personally,I have reservations at this point.
