Caterpillar Tune Info Needed
« on: December 14, 2015, 06:35:52 PM »
Are there any Cat mechanics on board here that have access to the tune specs for Cat engines? I need the injection tune specs for the Cat 3116 MUI injected,GM medium duty truck, 300hp @ 2600 rpm,732 tq.@1560 rpm. Cat shows that was an available tune for medium duty trucks.

Specifically,I need the timing dimension and the fuel setting dimension. Also ,it would be nice to see if my current 215 hp engine has the correct pistons for that tune. The perf spec for my engine is 2T5437,serial number 9GK04633 .

Thanks in advance if anyone has the info or knows someone that can get  it for me.

PM Romen9  Bet he can answer that.

If I believe I cannot do something it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe that I can, then I acquire the ability to do it , even if I didn't have it at the beginning.

We're already discussing it. He seems a bit knowledgeable of the little kitty to say the least. Think I'll listen to him.

So far it seems like a piston change unless my engine has the 2 piece pistons already. He's checking on that. A cam and turbo change as well and a Cat 300 hp/750 tq certified reliable tune is doable. A bump from 215hp/605tq to 300/750 would make me happy enough I think.

Locomotive I would say.

215hp?  I cant believe thats all that has.  It does well considering the trailer and load.  Well except for that climb out of Lave Springs,  LMAO LMAO

But for the pull to LS, no problems I'm sure.

Yep,Lance, never enough but there is a limit to what is reliable.  ;)

Ya,Carl,215. The range is from a low of 170 to 300.  Most were of the 215 tune from what I can see in the 90's . If I were only pulling to LS I'd leave it alone.

When you start dragging 38K down the road with 6.6L the road I'll understand it.  ;) ;)  Ya,I'd prefer to not have to do a piston change out. Nothing is happening till the house and buggy is done though. One nice thing,I have the red trailer and dually to get me to the dunes when I tear it down. Always nice to have a backup.

Negative. The dually has bed sides and won't allow hook up. Impossible to do.   It would be a nice test though since the kitty tuned to 300hp/750tq would be almost exactly the same ratings as the 2011 dmax in the dually.

so i talked to a friend of mine this am on my way in. he used to work on a lot of the cat engines waaaay back and seems to know quite a bit about the engines. he has had quite a few of the 3116's apart. he knew exactly what the 2 piece pistons are. he said that those were the most pronged to cracked rings based on what he and his father saw out of all the units they worked on. now the majority were grain trucks ( diff app than your totoer i know) then various other types. he also said on the 300 hp models they went through head gaskets more often than the lower hp units. he said over all good work horse engines. so do they make head studs for that motor? maybe better rings these days?

Haven't read of any reported head gasket issues.

There are several different pistons but just the 2 types. One piece aluminum or articulated (2 piece, steel crowns w/aluminum skirts). Articulated are used in all higher hp tunes.

Reported issues are mostly dropped #5 exhaust valve seat or broken #5 ex valve. Seems it is imperative the valves are kept adjusted.

There are no aftermarket performance things that I know of for this engine.
