Title: Thinking outloud
Post by: Yummi on February 18, 2013, 03:45:37 PM
So, I need more power.  Well, torque actually.  Currently have a 3.0 Honda that should be about 200hp, 195# @ 250 #'s of weight.

Options, without breaking the bank look like j35 - 3.5 honda with 265hp, 250# tq

Found a buick 215 V8 with 250# tq and lower HP than the honda.  That intrigues me.

Tell me plus and minus of 3.5 hond vs 215, the carb issue seems to have been resolved off road as I recall as all the Big Block cars run them.  Would be straight trade for my current 3.0 and my costs would be starter, and custom 8/1 exhaust plus install.

Intrigued by thought of small 8 in the car with 250 tq.

Ups?  Downs?  Sideways?

Overlay the torque curve of all 3.The one with the most area under the curve is the one you should choose. That's the one with the most usable tq.over the broadest range.

The Honda 3.5 would be the winner as it has the most area under  the curve as the tq maxs at a higher rpm.

Most every Honda guy seems real happy.  The lower torque curve of the 3.5 seems to be the plus.  All will mate to the new trans?  New adapter plate I'm sure.  But all the ##'s will hold to the new gear box?

Not necessarily. Have you charts of the curves?

Leave the Buick to a museum. The castings on those weren't all that great to start out with. After all these years the chances of the block still being in really good shape are slim. Nothing like seeing coolant seeping out the side of the block......... I guaranty the Hondas will be cheaper and more reliable in the long run.

what is the cost of the 3.5 and/or v-8 swap compared to a turbo for the current?

I have played quite a bit with the Hondas and if done correctly they are quite good. Personally I would stay away from 50 year old motors, one of the areas where newer is pretty much always better.

No, will have to put my search skills to the test

Swap on 3.5 would be about 3k for turn key.  Figure that would be better money than turbo for current?

All right, boat anchor it is.  Just sounded like an interesting idea.  Can still find rover motors that are not 50 years old.....

Expiration date is a relative term.  Ask Faber.......  LMAO

So, back to motors.  How about a EZ30 from Subaru?  Only want to do this once.

Hey now!  Watch it yummi, respect your elders.  Heheee.

I'm certainly not the one to ask. I'm just not up to date on much of anything  with less than 8 cylinders. Just not my cup of tea. Not trying to be a smartass. It's just that when I look for HP I tend to go for what I consider the best bang for the buck. If I'm buying aftermarket everything under the sun for an engine ,it's just not that much more to have 8 cylinders as 6 or even 2. Cranks/rods/valvetrain/specialty heads  and on and on and on ...... are high as hell in the first place so ,IMO,why not go balls out?
If I were you though ,considering what you state as your driving style,I'd go for the largest displacement engine would fit and make the most torque beginning around 1000 rpm and maxing out around 3500 max that your tranny is capable of handling. Now go find that engine!!!!! ;) ;) Whatever it is.   ;D ;D

Clean up on aisle four.
 Just lower your gear ratio.

Well, after some thoughts on costs, etc decided to stick with Honda.  Will do 3.5 and then a turbo if it is not enough.  Won't cost me anything net after I sell my 3.0, etc so free to me upgrade.

And were off like a terd of hurtles.

Got a wire harness and know a dude who will strip it out.

Currently sourcing other do dads and will have harness done by the time all my other do dads arrive. Figure last Dune trip is around 3/30 or so and will make the swap after that.

Anybody has a turbo system they want to sell let me know. Might just hold off on turbo and see how I like N/A 3.5, but open to good deals.

Will get video of current 3.0 in car and post it for sale soon if anybody is thinking of upgrading.
