I have an existing splined shaft that i need to match.  How do I determine what cutter i need?

If you do not have the actual part number he can reference from a book to cross it with I would send the part to him.

To much with ramp angles and depth to measure wrong. A tad off and the strength falls if contact area is not complete.
Your mission isn't to dive feet first into hell, but to make sure its crowded when you get there.

Ya ,I understand that much but I want to UNDERSTAND it like everything else we do. If I KNOW what I'm doing I can make sure others are on the same page with me. In other words I'd like some one to give me at least a basic understanding of splines or where to look. I've looked the web over till I'm really lost on where else to look for info and really would like to understand splines better.
