small dilemma
« on: June 08, 2010, 01:50:12 PM »
I have found out the holes for my Pircv Drive Hubs were tapped wrong.   Should I just have the CV's remade?  Or have the holes re-tapped next to the ones already there?    The holes currently are course thread.  The bolds I have are the standard 930 Cv bolts with fine threads.  I searched around and was not able to find any CV bolts that were course threaded.

Just redrill between and tap with fine. No problems with that at all.

Are you sure those aren't fine. Can't tell for sure but they seem to be fine to me. Metric perhaps?

Drill out the holes for heli-coils, you will get a stronger thread this way too

I went to Home Depot on my lunch. Found that the holes are Metric. M10x1.5 to be exact.    The bolts I have are 3/8-24 thread pitch.   :(

m10.. is pretty close to 3/8th isnt it? either drill and retap for your bolts... or heli coil like was said earlier..  or, buy new bolts. those are your options :D

I was thinking if I could find some longer CV bolts I could thread them to the M10x1.5??

I agree with master on this. In the past, I use to do the exact same thing to OEM VW type one stub axles, to mount up type 2 bus cv joints. 8) 8) 8)

Bad idea IMO

No worry about strength. No issue at all.However-haven't I seen some metric cv bolts somewhere?

Cant re drill and tap either, you will loose alot of thread contact with just changing pitch. The helicoil is a good idea and is stronger. 930 CVs are for M10 Bolts. Some CV bolts step down to a 3/8-24 thread. The Edge plans call for an M10-1.5 tap, I tap mine M10-1.25. I have socket cap bolts that will suit your tapped hubs. E-mail me for details. Probably your best option so far. ;)
