Honda NR V-4 Engine

I THOUGHT I was aware of most things engine. I was WRONG!!!!!!! Look at the pistons.

I remember that. Honda was trying it in GP road racing. It must have been the 1980s. I think it was ring sealing problems that did it in.

Yes,GP limited engines to 4 cylinders at the time. Knowing what I do ,I see no way for there to have been a way to ring the pistons reliably. I also see huge issues related to the 2 rods per piston .

never heard nor seen one of them!!!!   interesting design but ya i can see the issue. funny part is that honda has a lot of bastard 1 off designs out there, in every type of engine they built.

The joke was, NR stood for Not ready.....

Most of the development for that motor was done on a turbo V-twin. Their Siamese bore V8 was spinning more RPM than anybody else and making way more power per CC than any 4 stroke before it. I think it won the 24 hours of LeMans, The names on the bike were Gill, Ken, Malcom. Not well known riders at the time, but they got the job done.

Apparently they made 700 street legal versions to homologate them for world superbike racing. Little did I know. Wonder how much a top end kit for one of those goes for........

interesting read and like i said a lot of bastard designs but atleast they test them on the bikes and atv's before they implement them into the automobiles
