twisted my shaft
« on: December 09, 2012, 12:10:10 PM »
Well I had concerns about the shaft in my center drive, and best thing I torn a boot at dunes cause another day woulda cost me a lot more. thumb down

So was in search of a better material and found this, http://www.protodie.com/1-38-dia-Center-splined-Shaft_p_51.html
Ends machined and taped, little long but I can trim easy, and then heat treated, 1045 steel.  I believe this will do the trick, and get me to the point of being able to put in reverse box.

Question.  The one I have now is pressed in drivers side and welded, other side on splines.  Was thing of doing same on this one.  So is there need to have retreated after welding?

IMO,it needs to start out not heat treated, welded, then whole thing heat treated. IMO also, both pieces would ideally be made from the same materials. If that's not an option I'd do it with a removable , splined hub on both sides.

The 930 drive flanges are standard stuff from (002,091)??, then one seide bored out a bit so the smooth shaft will press in and then welded ea side.  Other side flange is bored and a 21 spline coupler pressed in and its welded.  Then held in place with bolt.  All these 930 adapter flandes are chromo, either china or USA, and the shaft is mild.  So I see your thought on welding mild to chromo since they are not going to heat treat the same.  Not haveing much luck on a chromo splined shaft, but I've got a few calls in.  I can get the right size shaft in chromo 20 spline from Grob and change the spline adapter.  I want something that will hold up, but dont want to go completly custom cause that cost $$$$, and cost you again if you have a woops moment.

Another ??  I can go with 4130 shaft.  Would it need to be heat treated to releive stress if welded to 4130 flange?  I thinking yes to keep cracks away from weld area.

If it were me I'd go with 4340 for all parts, heat treat appropriately and never again have a worry. Unfortunately Grob doesn't stock that. I haven't checked anywhere else.

4130 will not through harden. IMO, 4130 is not what you need.

Ok looks like my best option is removable splined cv cup on ea side and the heat treated splined shaft from protodie.  I can get the shaft to fit current center section width.

Where's my Santa list, I need to modify it........... ;) ;D :-X

Yes and no.  Once you twist it you cant undo it.  Perminate.  But I found a new one, but because of the size and a few options I wanted it was special order.  Should be here for X-mas!!! I'll put some pics up after "surgury".    nono LMAO LMAO  nono

Just want to give a big thanks to Jody at Protodie.  Got the splined shaft in custom length, drilled and taped ea end and the heat treated.  Fits right in existing carrier with same bearings.  He said no one had reported a failure issues since he'd gone to this design.  And all without breaking the bank.
