cv joints and rack and pinion question

hi guys im building a dune buggy and i want to do independent rear suspension but i dont know anything about cv joints/axles i want to learn how they get put together and how to make them and with what. and one question about racks and pinions, what is the advatage of a rack and pinion? whats the difference with it and the type of system 4 wheelers use?

There's quite a bit of info about cv's here. Try a search to see what you find. Then ask questions. We're glad to help.
as to the rack compared to the 4 wheeler pivot is that bumpsteer can be designed out wheras there is no way I know of to eliminate bumpsteer with the pivot setup.Bumpsteer on long travel buggies MUST be eliminated or it will be a handling nightmare at best and deadly at worst.

and by long travel buggies its how much the suspension travels? i am not really looking to build a buggy to do any jumps its just to go ride in the trails and play in the mud so i wont want like 16" of suspension travel

If you limit the suspension travel to just a few inches like a quad/4 wheeler typically have then the pivot will be fine. Up to a point. Just how big a buggy are you talking about?

its 60" wide and not sure how long itll be yet and its a two seater

Due to the width a rack would b a far better choice that is,not that a pivot couldn't work. It just wouldn't be worth a crap IMO on a wider vehicle with even minimal travel needed..
