off the shelf hubs and axles
« on: August 08, 2011, 10:36:42 AM »
What kind of travel could be had with the intrepid axles. If the left side was used as it is the longer of the two. Would they work for a buggy with only 8" of travel. Or maybe the ford f150 or s-10 axles and hubs. What kind of travel could be had with these. I would think that the 4wd stuff would have more angle.
I am looking for an off the shelf solution for axles and hubs. Obviously I am not looking for a 12" travel buggy

Anyone have any experience with this.

I'd use the long side axle, unless your wanting a narrow buggy, they'll easily give 8-12".  Issue will be spline shaft for inside, is it common, or maybe pull one from the tranny?
But for $70 http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_New-CV-Axle-Shaft-Assembly-GSP_15870322-P_945_R%7CGRP60007_524486026____
with a limited lifetime warrenty.  rofl rofl rofl

I was thinking about using two left sides. As far as the inboard cv I was thinking about cutting off the stub peice and welding a flange to it and make a flange for my center axle. Are those axles in the link for an intrepid?

I found these for a good price and free shipping. At least in canada. ;D
I don't know how they can even make them for that price.

The F-150 joint fits the Intrepid hub. 930 shafts fit the F-150 joint although you could probably just use the F-150 shafts. The splines on the joints are a little longer than the hub so I laser cut the spacer rings along with the plates to weld into the knuckles.

So both of those cv's are from the f-150 and the axle is a 930. How long is the axle shaft. Is the ford lug bolt pattern 5/4.5"

Yes, those are both F-150 CVs: http://aftershockmotorsports.com/Custom-Buggy-Parts/Driveline/High-Angle-Heavy-Duty-CV-Joint

That is a 28" axle, the longest EMPI sells. The Ford lug pattern is 5 on 135mm. The lug pattern on the pictured Intrepid hub is 5 on 4.5".

Do you have any idea what the length of the ford axle is?

Opinion time. This is a very good way to go

I have one in the shop and the stock axle is short, don't know how short at this time but probably 14" I would guess. this isn't a bad way to go especially for a mini. I have been using jeep wheel bearings for some time now w/o problems on cycle powered and my v-6 powered.

Those EMPI axles are very reasonable and you can  get them in 2" increments up to 28" depending what you need.

To run that setup though you will have to have minimal plunge.  Trailing arms WILL NOT WORK.

I don't think you will have problems. A CV joint on an off road car has to handle shock load that it does not see on the street. A street car can't have the wheel fall off when the car hits a pot hole at 80. I think the Intrepid hubs and bearings are strong enough although lighter than the F-150 ones.

I brought this thread back to life to group these pictures together. Carl asked me to get some pictures with a 12" wheel. You can see the hub and even with the generic plates I made fit quite easily in the wheel. That is a front tire, I sold the wheels I had rear tires mounted on.
