I did a little search on a salvage yard locator site we use at work, these are the options I get which would be the pre-ferred?

M.T., AWD, w/locking diff
M.T., RWD, w/o locking diff
M.T., RWD, w/locking diff
A.T.
M.T., AWD, w/o locking diff

I kind of like the rwd with locking diff but I know it's not awd but for others this would be kind of sweet if it held up!

well that sucks!!      just type in car-part.com and type in 87 -92 vw vanagon then fill in from there it should work for anyone, I don't know why the links don't work.

Those had a viscous coupling to the front also  :-X . For the price of a gear set for them, you would be much better off using the new mendiola 5 speed AWD tranny with something like an 8.8 front diff. Now slap a turbo subie motor on it and your talking buisness.......

The R&P's for the front and rear will cost almost that much.
 
I think the Mendis are in the 12K range.
