I'm haveing a real time sourceing a smaller front sprocket for the zx12. Seems Kawa used a 12T output shaft on the zx9, some zx10, z12, zx14 but nothing avail smaller than 15t sprocket. Really dont want to go larger in rear, looking for a 13 front. Anyone with any sources to try. Being shot down by the reg spots for custom sprocket.

Call sprocket specialists
-
Call Dieter, he has the hook up. Well, if he has time.

LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO I had a flash back.
No on Sprocket Specialist
No on Sidewinder
No on crossing it over to another bike with a different offset sprocket(did find 14T)
Best option so far, cut out center spine, press into tooth size I want have welded. Or go bigger on rear sprocket.
Got a drag rack mfg looking and a true sprocket mfg checking too.....

Check JT sprocket site. Did a quick check, found CBR600 has Z12 spline but, 28.7 od instead of 28. Tim
-
What yr. Thats the size. need 28.7
-
I was mistaken, it is 28 od ,also 14 is as low as they go. It was 87 to 98 cbr600. Their site has specs on spline size, so you may find one yet. Tim sorry Carl :'(
-
That is a great site, I've looked at every sprocket there over last couple days. drowning Hoping a couple of the leads can come thru, else I'll probably have to swap rear sprockets.
-
im assuming youve checked other models of kawasaki for the smaller sprocket? or older models? i found on my 2003gsxr that it used the same spline and sprockets were interchangable with 1990's suzuki katanas... good luck.
-
looks like half of all bikes ever made used the 13 spline shaft. the 12 spline was only on mabye 6 models over the last 20 yrs. tough to cross
-
Local machine shop cut the splined area out of an old zx12 that came with motor and bored a hole into another 12T sprocket to fit. Nice V for a weld. Now my question, Should I try to re-heat treat the sprocket?
-
Yes ,but before you can HT you must know what the material is . No way around that.
-
4130 chromoly. standard sprocket stuff. Just wonder if the surface hardness would be lessened from the weld? Not worried about weld, just wear on teelth and spline.

don't know Carl but I think I would try to stay with something that would be off the self or carry and extra or two with me. Don't want to come all the way to LS and break one and not have a replacement. worse let all the way to St Anthony.

You can/need to have it heat treated after welding then. Find a HT shop in your area.

Fter a little more diggin, one is hardened to B90, other to C45? Found a chart that sorta compares the diff process. Hum more reading.
Great news, saw yest on tv that everything on the internet is true since they cant lie. And you know its true if you see it on tv. LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO

i must be missing something here cause if the zx9r is the same then when I used an '01 zx9r i purchased a 13t counter shaft sprocket from sprocket specialists for it. is the '01 different?
-
The rockwell scales can be cross referenced. Just take your modded sprocket to a local HT guy, tell him what the steel is and you want it HT to R45. Done.

Early zx9's had 12 spline shaft. zx10's didn't, that I've found. older z1000, z1100 used the 12 spline but in a 630 size. Can get ofset one to fit those in a 14T 530 size.
If this one works out I'll have some made with the spacer and gear for the elec reverse unit I've been spying.
-
I know on the '01 xz9r and the '05 zx10r I bought 13 tooth countershaft sprockets from sproket specialists for 530 chain. been a few years ago actually back in '07 on the zx10r.

Hey I'm new here, but I have gone through the same sprocket issues as you. I have 2 things of advice for you.
1. since the sprocket is chromoly, I wouldn't even bother with trying to heat treat it. If you keep on top of your chain from time to time your front sprocket will last a long time.
2. Sprocket specialist has been very good to me. There is a lady named Deedee that is really good at cross referencing sprockets from different bikes. If she can't find a sprocket for you, you can send them your sprocket and they will match it up with sprockets that they have, AND keep a record for you on future orders. Jtsprockets.com is also a good place to do research.
-
True 4130 will not thru harden. It CAN be case hardened though resulting in a tough core with good surface hardness.
-
If Deedee is the one who answers the phone, while nice, she was no help all 3 times I called. Kept hopeing for another cust service rep. rofl
Talked to JT a few time too, they're not too far from me. Lady never called me back. I should have just showed up, but then :police: :'( :police:
But the good news http://www.rossonracing.com/store/ has 13, 14, 15 in stock and lady said she could prob have a 12 made with next order. They have many made same time. No idea who/where. $30 ea. Having a 12t made local and will pickup a 13 from them. I'll have $150 in the 12t from parts and machining.
