Title: HID vs LED
Post by: fabr on September 19, 2011, 08:22:57 PM
I have no idea how much brighter the LED's are than the HID's in the open at night but in the shop the diff is WOW!!!!!!

Yep, LED's are like looking at the sun. That's why HID's are going to soon be a thing of the past. ;D ;D ;D

General consensus is that LEDs do a better job short range than HID re: Dispersion.  You can and will out run an LED.  It does not throw as far as an HID.  I dont think the Kragen HID's are all that when it comes to time to see.  So, that is not really a fair comparison.  Great for Rhinos, et al, not so good for a long travel car at 60mph +.  Think ACRO or other high end HID.  Stupid bright, stupid far.

Most folks end up running a combo for that reason.

My night vision is bad and with glare I just about give up anymore.   Somebody ever figures a good way to get the glare I would be happy.  On the next car there will be some serious forethough that goes into light placement, etc as that seems to be one ticket to reduce glare.

For this car, maybe the next step is the amber lights for me.....  Seems if that was the bees knees one would see more of them....

BTW Fabr, as your car is not finished out yet re: color, etc - you can try some of the theories out.

1.  Place the light bar at the mid point of the roof.  Let the roof act as a visor from your own light.  Get the light in front of your eyes.
2.  Place some HID at the "B" Pillar or forward, again, seems to be good to leave your eyes dark looking into the light.  If your face is lit up, even just a bit, from your own lights, chances are you can benefit from placing your lights at a different location.

Just food for thought.

Mounting 2 6in Rigid LED's up front and 4 Baja Designs Fuego's on top mounted at the B pillar.

Anyone have small lights to light up left or right of the immediate front of the buggy?

Yep, I have one 50W flood light mounted on each side of my car, rite in front of the rear wheels. They are shooting out on a 45* angle. 8) 8) 8)

Here's where they fit perfectly. Here's where they are going to stay. ;D ;D ;) ;) ;D ;D I may well put a couple of 4" flood LED's tho  up front shining to the sides.

Looks good - like they were meant to be there.   They seemed to be placed pretty far forward, so glare might not be an issue.  Never really noticed the depth of your dash area before - mine is pretty shallow.

Hey Fabr,  what air filter are you running?

Ya,they're plenty far enough forward to eliminate any glare to me. The HID's were fine and they were in the same place. Some people think that behind them is a good place. Not so as you pointed out unless the roof blocks the light from the cockpit..

Just doing a K&N but I'd rather have one of those centrifugal ones. Forget the name.  I might still mount one but the specs on one that is big enough for a busa is pretty bulky. Maybe I was misinterpreting the charts tho. I need to contact them to be sure. Just haven't had a spare second for so long i wouldn't know what to do with it. LOL!!!

I think so but that's not why/how I got them. As yummi said ,they look like they were meant to be there.I couldn't have gotten luckier with the fit. Perfect fit ! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Sometimes I get lucky.

Donaldson, and no your not mistaken on the flow charts. They do not flow all that well. Most of them have the inner safety filter. You can discard those for about a 30% increase in flow with no filtering capability loss.

I am in the same boat.  For the LS1 it looks like I would need 2 and I just do not have the room.  At first I will use a K/N, but there are some filters out there that use a blue element and are dry cone shaped that are supposed to be a lot better than the K/N.

My K&n is up out of the way of dust and mud. With an outer skin I don't feel there's worry.

Those dry air filters that you are trying to think of are made by AFE (advanced flow engineering). 8) 8) 8)

I the type of conditions you drive in that's a decent set-up.

You will never hit the world pf brown outs like the Donaldson filters are designed for.
If you had miles of silt beds, you would need something like this.

I am trying to find a small pair (2" round) HID or LED to replace my stock halogens. I prefer the HIDs. I am not having much luck locating any. I run off of a stator so wattage is a big issue for me. I am lookinh to stay below 10 watts each. Any insight from you guys where I can locate some?
